Law for Business - 7th edition Review

Law for Business - 7th edition

I realize that many of you buying this book won't have a choice about it--it's probably required for a class you are taking and don't much care how good or bad the book it because you need it regardless. However, for those of you who do have a choice:
This textbook has 9 Parts (Intro to law, Contracts, Sales, Agency and Employment, Business Organizations, Property, Commerial Paper, Credit Transactions, Government Regulation) with a total of 48 chapters.
The format of the book, along with the firgures and tables, makes the book easy to read. When applicable, there is a case relating the law described to a real-world situation or a box with ethical considerations and questions. Additionally, the problems at the end of each chapter explore the issues and make students think of both sides of the arguement.
However, in certain areas when describing the law, the text can be vague. The authors could do better making it clear when and how a law is applicable. There are many times when doing the problems where I would look up the case or the issues involved online to get a complete picture.
Overall, a good textbook, especially with supplemental material to be given during lecture.

Organizational Behavior - 2002 publication Review

Organizational Behavior - 2002 publication

·Very little focus on individual behavior in organizations - I know this is not a psychology text, but, Jex (2002), or one of the other psych authors (Osland, 2000) could have used for this course with much better coverage and not alter the course objectives to a great extent.
·For a 2003 edition of text, the citations were very much out of date. The chapter on leadership for example (Chapter 14, which had a total of 53 citations) had only seven references within the last five years; 1998 or greater.
·I am not of the opinion that this was a graduate text. The stories, pictures, essay and "effective manager" were not intellectual in their added information. In many cases the added material didn't correspond to the text (see chart on page 48 and subsequent text explanation). Another example would be on page 157 they ask the reader to refer to Figure 8.2 and then explain the chart with text that isn't even related to the major sections of this chart.
oNot one of the Effective Manager boxes has references; where did all this good advice come from?
·Typo's abounded in the text, they always do - but check out page 233 Chapter summary - it's not the right chapter; this appears agan with chapter 19. I really had the feeling that this was written by three people who did not do a line-by-line update of the 7th edition.
·Of very serious concern would be the author's inclusion of sources in their writing. This infuriated me to no end. Page 63 under Gender "However, women are reported to be more conforming and to have lower expectations of success than men do." That is a very serious statement and it contains no citation - what reports, who, where, when? Another example is on page 85 when discussion perceptual differences in managers and employees - not citations given, even when stating that the differences are significant.
oJust to show that I did not cull these examples only from the front of the book, Pg 274 "Recent work on the linkages among corporate culture and financial performance reaffirms the importance of an emphasis on helping employees adjust to environment." What recent work, by who, saying what? This is just poor scholarship in my humble student estimation.

Spread Spectrum Communications Handbook, Electronic Edition Review

Spread Spectrum Communications Handbook, Electronic Edition
Average Reviews:

The authors focus primarily on military applications with hostile jammers, rather than commercial applications where co-channel interference is the main concern. The direct-sequence (DS) CDMA parts, however, are neither comprehensive nor up-to-date. This text would not deserve its label of "handbook" in its DS-CDMA coverage.
The frequency-hop (FH) CDMA parts of this text contain much useful and detailed mathematical exposition that I cannot readily find elsewhere in one volume. Quite inconveniently, the FH-CDMA sections are inter-mingled with the DS-CDMA sections. While I find plenty of useful mathematical details on FH-CDMA, those details are presented with little cohesion and offer little qualitative insight. I find myself buried with an avalanche of details with limited perspective.
The technical exposition here is truly terrible. I have just been reading the following sentence for several minutes and am yet to figure out its meaning: "In particular assume the simple repeat m code where for each data bit, m identical BFSK tones are sent where each of these tones are hopped separately." In what sense are these tones "identical" but yet "separate"? A simple equation here would have helped. In fact, I get so irritated by this poor technical writing that I get on the web and write this review to vent my frustration. The authors' aversion to use rigorous mathematics in their exposition does not help. The exposition ends up with very wordy but vague verbal descriptions, in place of concise and exact elucidations.

Pickles and Preserves Review

Pickles and Preserves

I'm so happy this book has been re-issued! I have my mother's copy of the original 1955 edition and it was her Bible in the Fall when the garden started yielding more produce than we could consume (and there were 10 of us!) What makes this cookbook particularly enjoyable is the variety of strange and fascinating recipes. Some are quick and easy to be made in small batches. A few are labeled "Career Girl" recipes and are made from frozen fruits and vegetables so busy "career girls" (a popular term in the 50s) could hurry home from their "girl Friday" jobs and whip up a batch of salad pickles that tasted like she had slaved in the kitchen for hours.
I love some of the very old-fashioned sounding chapters. Crystallized Fruits & Flowers has detailed instructions for crystallizing everything from strawberries to violets and tons of recipes including Honey & Rose-Petal Preserves and Glacéd Wine Figs. There is a chapter on Conserves, which I happen to be partial to, including Rhubarb (Pie Plant) Conserve and Red Beet Conserve. The rather lengthy Meats and Sea Food chapter includes all Venison Mincemeat, Pickled Oysters, instructions for brining, corning, and pickling meat, a variety of meat pastes, sausages and scrapples and "Easy Brined Shrimp".
Marion Brown's section on Preserves is testimony to the fact that early cooks could figure out a way to preserve darn near anything and includes quaint recipes like Sun-Cooked Strawberry Preserves, Pumpkin Chips, and Cantalope Preserves.
Perhaps the most unique recipe in the book is one she copied from a fifteenth century cookbook for "Peris in Syrippe and Wyne", She adds 2 interpretations of that, her own and a variation by a friend which adds orange slices. I love the idea of adding saffron.
I recently published a cookbook of my own (Fry Bacon. Add Onions: The Valentine Family & Friends Cookbook nd glancing through the section on Preserves I'm sure many of those recipes evolved from Marion Brown's cookbook. This is a highly readable treasure!

The conservation of food by pickling and preserving is an old and honorable art, writes Marion Brown in her introduction to Pickles and Preserves, first published in 1955. While the art of food preservation does indeed have a long history, it is also very much in step with contemporary interest in natural foods and home gardening. As the popularity of farmers' markets, natural food stores, and garden-to-table cookbooks attests, Americans are once again hungry for the taste of authentic home cooking. With its "heirloom" recipes and clear instructions, Pickles and Preserves introduces the modern cook to a wonderful piece of America's culinary heritage. The book's 408 recipes cover everything from preserves and relishes to chutneys, fruit butters, pickled meats, sauces, and even candied flowers for decorating desserts. Many of the recipes are surprisingly quick and simple. Many are for special delicacies to be savored with a holiday meal or given as gifts. Damon Fowler's new foreword expands and updates Brown's notes on preserving methods, equipment, and safety. The book will be useful to canners of all levels of experience.

This is a beginning guitar method. I think it is important for a student to have positive feedback to maintain the momentum of learning. As such, having a CD to play along with makes you feel like you're making music, even at the beginning stages. Also, teaching progressions and techniques and pointing out what famous songs use these is great. I recommend.

Jim Cramers Real Money Sane Investing in an Insane World - 2005 publication. Review

Jim Cramers Real Money Sane Investing in an Insane World - 2005 publication.
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I loved the book! I hated the book! And I have recommended it to many and continue to do so, but with caveats and frustrations.
First, if you haven't watched Cramer's `Mad Money' program at least once on CNBC, you need to do so. One show will give you more insight into Cramer's emotional make up and give you more of what to expect from his writings than any review! He is, at once, informative, opinionated, contradictory and entertaining. Well, my wife would disagree about the latter!
Second, like him or not, he is one of those rare investment book writers whose track record is quite public. And he has practiced what he preaches to make (and lose and make again) millions in the market, mostly using other peoples money! To ignore someone with his success is not smart, but to take anyone's investment opinion as the `only truth' is equally risky.
So, let's get to why I stated that I loved this book. Because I do strongly recommend this book to people relatively new to managing their own investments. I especially appreciate his `buy and homework' mentality since many people try to manage their investments without accepting that there is indeed work to be done. He does a good job of explaining why fundamentals are important and how to utilize basic measurements. He does a very good job in explaining market cycles, especially the major ones that cause `big money' (pension funds, mutuals, etc.) to move in and out of various sectors. In general, this is an excellent first read for people new to investing and a reminder of some basics for the rest of us.
Okay, so why did I sometimes feel that I hated the book. Well, first let's acknowledge that there is no perfect investing book or system. There are too many variables, especially those that include each investor's personal status - time available to do the work, time horizon before retiring, money available, etc. Every writer brings their own background and bias into their writings and, in turn, tends to become dismissive of other thoughts. But if you read many differing investment books by successful traders, you will find that the methods that they use differ and are at odds with each other. While I generally like Cramer's honesty, I find that sometimes he dismisses some investing methods out of hand which, since this books and programs are targeted to the average investor, serves to bias people based on his own personal biases. Some examples:
a)Jim is a `fundamental' investor - he relies on more traditional analysis of a companies balance sheet and earnings to determine whether to invest in a stock. That is fine, but he goes on to essentially dismiss people who trade predominantly on technical analysis, with a portion of his book essentially saying "nobody has ever made any money trading that way." This is simply not true. Technical trading is simply a different type and method of trading and, indeed, many people have made significant money trading based upon technicals and combined fundamental + technical strategies. While Jim may not use technicals, his wife does, and quite successfully according to him. So dismissing anyone using or promoting technical analysis in the book does not serve the reader. It simply supports his bias.
b)While not in the book, you will find if you read more from him or watch his program that he dismisses alternative investments like options. Again, it is not that the average investor should jump into options without having clear knowledge and understanding of the risks, but to simply dismiss other investment area is to do a disservice to investors who wish to advance and learn more about various markets. (Options, for example, are as risky as stocks - no more so. Their risks, however are different and the knowledge needed is greater than for straight stocks, but given the investor's willingness to learn and understand options BEFORE beginning to trade them, options can actually REDUCE the risks of stock investing.)
Cramer strongly advises against simply following any advisors opinion to guide stock investments, yet sometimes his dismissals without substantiation serve the same purpose for those who may `believe' only Jim Cramer.
So, I highly recommend this book, especially for people who are relatively new to managing their own investments. Even people who only have a 401k can learn a great deal that can help them do a far better job managing the limited options most 401ks offer and improve their results. This is a great starting point for the average investor. But don't become so enamored with Cramer's forceful style that you stop thinking for yourself. Take his advice - learn from his experience - put it into practice = become comfortable that you can implement it and make money from it. And then, when ready, keep your mind open to the many other investment methods and markets that exist. Each requires study and work, but if your temperament, time and dedication allow you to, you may find it even more profitable to move beyond this first step.

If you prefer to buy one curriculum of material that is well organized instead of a bookcase full of booklets that don't tie together very well, this is the course you have been looking for.
This starts from zero and teaches you exactly what you need to know to really learn to play guitar. You will develop knowledge and skills in theory, music reading, technique, variety of styles, etc.
The course is appropriate for beginner and intermediate level guitar players. Many who think they are intermediate level will find they are beginners when they tackle this course.
The course will take most people 10-14 months or more to complete, but when you are done you will be able to read music (treble clef, anyway), understand how music works (thoery), you'll have a basic understanding of acoustic and electric gear, some effects, what you need in an amplifier, and other basic gear. Most importantly, you will have learned how to play guitar, and will be able to speak, read and write the language of musicians, and will have the basis to take your playing into any genre and develop further. You will have developed technique for a variety of styles, and will be able to play notes, chords, rhythms, and actualy know what you are doing, and why.
The course is supported with an active discussion board and many users worldwide. Also blogs, a user sponsered yahoo site, user contributed materials, and more. The author participates in the discussion boards and answers questions as well.
It is well organized, the instructional design is very good, you can see where you are going (unlike with lessons) and you can do it at your own pace, at your own time. I'm not knocking lessons, they have their place, but I think this is an excellent way to learn to play guitar if you are committed to learning.
If you aren't, buy a tab book and plink out some notes you can't name. If you are looking for a magic potion or something that will turn you into a great guitarist in a month...sorry - that does not exist. Join the ranks of the guy who ranked this a "1".
The course is well done, not a scam, and highly recommended. It is professionally produced and a good value at the new price listed here of $229. I paid slightly less buying it on sale. I bought this new, it was worth every penny. Make sure you get the full course with bonus materials, they are worth the extra money. At around $200, this delivers what you might get from around $1000 worth of lessons. Google Learn and Master Guitar and make sure you buy it on "sale".

This book is really cool. It has cinemanga-ish adaptations of Billy and Mandy: "Tricycle of Terror", KND: "C.O.L.L.E.G.E.", Samurai Jack: "Jack and the Gangsters", and the first episode of Megas XLR.This may be something that I expected from TOKYOPOP, but that's okay.
And to make this book even cooler, they threw in a bonus DVD of that first Megas XLR episode, which is great. (Did you know the original title of that show was "Lowbrow" ?) I hope you'll enjoy this book as much as I did. And if you liked this, then you'll also like "Kids WB Jam-Packed Action", too.

This graphic novel is very similar to the "Cartoon Network Jam-Packed Action" and "Kids WB Jam-Packed action" books. Play Guitar with Coldplay (Guitar Jams Series) Review

Play Guitar with Coldplay (Guitar Jams Series)
Average Reviews:

This is an almost decent product. Mostly I was just impressed with how the musicians who played the instruments on the accompanying CD sound just like Coldplay. The only difference is that there is no Chris Martin vocals...So the first couple tracks are like karaoke.---But I was under the impression that there was also a set of tracks with no guitar at all, just bass and drum. This is not the case. There is just less guitar on the no guitar tracks. So if you want to play along with a band that sounds just like Coldplay to learn their songs, this is good. But even better for that purpose--- the actual Coldplay CD's.
The string by string tuning track is helpful, but that's what a tuner is for-- or just tune to a song.
If you own the albums, I would reccommend just buying the full album tab books for Parachutes and Rush of Blood to the Head and playing along with the actual recordings.

Designed and laid out as a tribute to Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora this collection of music scores by British company Professional Guitar Workshops also comes with a bonus CD where the first eight songs are played with all the sounds of the other band members, except for the lyrics and of course Richie's contribution. Your mission is to follow the printed music scores and become Richie. The second half of the CD is the same as the first but with Richie's guitar sounds as well so you know how you should have sounded.
This music score collection was published back in 1998 when Bon Jovi's latest album was These Days. Although most of the songs you'd expect to find on here such as the ultimate guitar intro Wanted Dead or Alive, Blaze of Glory (it does acknowledge Richie was not the one who played this on the original soundtrack but does do it live) and so forth are all here. Interestingly though the publishers have gone with an unreleased song from the album Keep the Faith (Dry County). In the pages before the music scores there's also a brief history of the band.
The only downside is that the cover obviously wasn't designed by a Bon Jovi fan as one of the songs is misspelled and the another has extra words.
The eight songs and their music scores in Jam With Bon Jovi are
Livin' on a Prayer (called Living on a Prayer on the cover)
Wanted Dead or Alive
You Give Love a Bad Name
Dry County
In These Arms (Called In These Arms Tonight by the cover designer)
Blaze of Glory
Keep the Faith
Bad Medicine

I've bought lots of beginner books for learning rock and blues guitar technique, but this book is great for learning to play real songs quickly without having to understand a lot of theory or being a master of scales. The standards covered in the book and CD are simplified versions - slowed down - of Hotel California, Europa (Santana), Tush, Riders on the Storm and Proud Mary. Once you pick through the tab a few times, you can start playing along with the CD fairly quickly. I'd still recommend that you invest in a utility that let's you slow down the tracks even more to be able to hear the different notes, like Transcribe!

As a happy owner of a tattered and disintegrating 1991 version of this map, I decided it was time to upgrade. My local map store kindly ordered the most recent version of the map (2005). While the map looks fine and has roads and attractions listed, it has a serious failing. We like to camp, and not always in provincial parks which are well marked on this map. I gave this map such a low rating because all the campgrounds are listed alphabetically, while they are notated on the map numerically. So, you find the campground number where you would like to stay and find that unless you know the name of it, you have to run your finger through a very long list (several columns) of campgrounds to find the matching number. Very annoying. In fact useless. To make matters worse, I called MapArt to ask if I was missing something, and was told that the map is out of print/discontinued, that the speaker had NO idea why the information was so presented, and essentially "tough luck". No other help in the offing, no apology, no suggestions for locating the information I need. I am unhappy! My map store is none too happy either, as they just bought a bunch of these maps. I may be over reacting because there is other info available on the map, but I wanted specific information that was essentially unavailable, and thought the attitude of the MapArt person was obnoxious! If you want this map, be aware that this flaw exists.
