High Roads (Cliffhanger) Review

I've been a huge fan of Leinil Yu art and so I dug around and found this work by him back in 2002. Needless to say I'm really impressed- its a bit less stylistically Yu than his later works but the fluid action panels and solid story by Lobdell are classic.
It's too bad this title was vastly underappreciated and wasn't continued, still I imagine it's was partly the result of this great work that got him recognized and hired by Marvel.
High Roads doesn't have much depth to it, and as another reviewer put it, it plays out much like an Indiana Jones adventure- making it a light-hearted but fun and entertaining ride. Highly recommended- get it while you still can.

The story starts with Cletus Cassidy, serving 11 consecutive life sentences, in the same cell as Eddie Brock, who continues to train himself for the destruction of Spiderman. When Eddie's "other", the alien symbiote bent on Spidey's death, breaks him outta jail, it leaves behind a spawn of itself, the same yet different. Cassidy runs into it while watching Venom flee. They bond and CARNAGE is born. Spiderman investigates the random murders of CARNAGE after a fellow lab assistant at ESU is killed there. After a tussle, Spidey decides the only way to stop one madman with no sense of right is to bring in another with a twisted sense of justice. Venom and Spiderman team up to end Carnage's carnaval of blood.

Top Cow has given us a story arch that entertaining and fun. What's great is that if you've never read anything having to do with the darkness or witchblade then your still ok, in fact, this is a good place to start if your not familiar with any of top cows characters. Long story short, the dark, the light, etc go to war hoping to tip the balance to their favor. Everything good about this book covers everything such as writing, art, story, etc, so I highly suggest that you give this a shot.

Now You See Me ... (Poison Apple) Review

Now You See Me ... (Poison Apple)

This fourth book in the new series, Poison Apple Books from Scholastic, is not as dark as the previous book, but it was a great read. These books are geared for readers who enjoyed the softer and gentler Candy Apple Books but are looking to read something with a little more edge. This book is, in part, the story of best friends, Abby and Lena, and they are thrift store junkies. Lena has been searching for a Polaroid Impulse, a treasure she had been looking for because her cousin gave her a whole case of film for it. But shortly after getting it, strange things start happening. Things start showing up in the pictures that are not really there. First a water tower and then a boy, and with each succeeding picture the boy is clearer. But Lena is being haunted and haunted through her new prized camera. She needs to find out what the boy wants or needs because her life is starting to fall apart. Can she figure out the hints in the pictures and solve the mystery?
This story was really fun to read. The story told from a photographer's perspective, with how to frame photos and compositions was an interesting twist. It is another good book in a great series.

Best friends Lena and Abby love searching through thrift stores for lost treasures. When they find an old Polaroid camera, they can't wait to try it out. But the photos that develop are troubling -- things that weren't really there appear in the pictures.

Creepiest of all is the image of a boy, dark and angry looking. He shows up, over and over, clearer each time. Can the girls discover what the ghost boy wants -- before it's too late?
