Alan Watts did an excellent job in putting together this guide. The topos and maps are high quality, the photos are excellent and it's easy to navigate. But what really sets this guide apart from many others is the quality of the historical perspective and the overall readability of the text. Watts played an important part in the development of sport climbing in the US and thus was a controversial figure for years. His treatment of those tumultious times is worth the cost of the guide.

Rock Climbing Virginia, West Virginia, and Maryland Review

This book provides accurate access and route information for over 25 climbing areas in the mid-atlantic region. And contrary to the previous review's comments (obviously "gabriel3493" has some personal issues), this book provides directions and route info only for OPEN climbing areas. In fact, the author spends a lot of time discussing access considerations and climber advocacy, and he definitely does not even encourage trespassing. Read the book, use the book, and you'll see it's "right on."

How to Climb: Advanced Rock Climbing Review

This book covers many subjects from clipping bolts on sport routes to building anchors on trad climbs and techniques from the crimp grip to knocking of the figure four. It really doesn't go into to much depth on any of the many subjects (because there are so many)it covers but in my opinion I think it gives sufficient advice about them. It covers Techniques, Anchors, Protection Placements, Sport Climbing, Aid Climbing, Soloing, Crack Climbing and many more.

The most comprehensive look at the subject yet. AdvancedRock Climbing picks up where John Long's How to Rock Climb leaves off, describing the climbing techniques and rope tricks of the modern rockclimber. The guide covers both sport and traditional climbing, andself-rescue techniques, in Long's easy-to-read, entertaining style.

Rock Climbing: Mastering Basic Skills (Mountaineers Outdoor Expert) Review

Craig Luebben's new book represents a huge leap forward in climbing skills manuals. Though many excellent skills manuals exist (including Luebben's past works and the vaunted but unweildy Freedom of the Hills which goes beyond rock climbing into aplinism and mountaineering) this manual really sepetrates itself with its patient explanations and particularly with its photo instructions with added graphics for clarity. Many books of this genre have struggled with the clarity involved with diagramming knots and sysytems and Craig obviously went to great lengths to rectify this issue. The book is organized well and is easy to follow. It is nice to have these smaller manuals which focus on a specific discipline in the sport. As a climbing guide and instructor I am frequently asked to suggest learning manuals. This one will now be at the top of the list.
