The Joy of Cookies Review

My copy is spattered with ingredients from front to back. There is not a loser recipe in the bunch. Illustrations scattered throughout inspire you to try new and old favorites. The recipe format is easy to read and directions are clear and simple. I especially like that there are international recipes included. The Italian wine cookies, the cinnamon bars and Kentucky bourbon bars are always on my Christmas cookie platter. I have many cookbooks and Christmas magazines with recipes but I could chuck them all in favor of this one little gem of a cookbook.

Once you've seen the cover of this book, you've seen it all. All of the pumpkins throughout this book are simply variations of the same theme. If you're after recipes, you'll probably like the book okay, but if you're after carving inspiration, look elsewhere.

The Blackberry Farm Cookbook: Four Seasons of Great Food and the Good Life Review

This book is an absolute beauty, and makes me want to visit Blackberry Farm. What a great philosophy towards food and life! The only recipe I've used so far is for their Blackberry Vinegar, which I used to buy at Williams-Sonoma to make a reduction sauce for Pork Tenderloin with, and they discontinued. It was by far the simplest recipe for Blackberry Vinegar I've found, and worked perfectly. Can't wait to dig more deeply into the recipes in this gorgeous book.

D.I.Y. Delicious: Recipes and Ideas for Simple Food from Scratch Review

D.I.Y. Delicious: Recipes and Ideas for Simple Food from Scratch

This is a useful and well-written book. Vanessa Barrington provides easy-to-follow recipes, just like any good cookbook author should, but she goes the extra mile and gives the reader ways to use what's just been made. Say I make a vinaigrette. So then what? If I follow Vanessa's advice (and I really should because it is excellent), I can use it as a fish marinade, or dress a green salad, or create a grain dish, or... The mix and match possibilities for her recipes seem endless, which makes this book ridiculously useful.
Plus, the recipes themselves are pretty great. I have a family to please, one of whom is a vegetarian, so I am always looking for interesting ways to prepare beans and grains and veggies -- recipes for all three abound in this book. The way the recipes can be juggled and combined really plays into the way I fix meals: some of this for one person, some of the that for the other, with meat as a side dish. This book totally works for the way I cook.
I am a DIY enthusiast (I have a sourdough starter in the fridge, I make canned goods) but I've never made my own fresh cheeses. This book shows me how in a way that seems completely NOT intimidating. And the book itself is nicely produced, with great photos and plenty of friendly advice. It's like having Vanessa hanging out in your kitchen, showing you how it's done. I love that.

Saving the Seasons: How to Can, Freeze, or Dry Almost Anything Review

Saving the Seasons: How to Can, Freeze, or Dry Almost Anything

This is by the same publisher as Simply in Season, which I am cooking my way through on my blog. Unlike the other books in "the Mennonite trilogy" (Simply in Season , More-With-Less , and Extending the Table), though, Saving the Seasons doesn't include little anecdotes and essays about living simply and how eating is impacted by our faith.
What is does have is lots and lots of beautiful photos, which are inspiring and also show step by step instructions, which are great for those just learning how to preserve food.
Like most preserving books, this one covers more ground than just canning. Topics include
* A guide to the harvest (various fruits and vegetables, when they're in season, and best methods for preserving)
* Canning (individual fruits and vegetables as well as vegetables, meats, and soups; herbed vinegars; pickles and relishes; jams, jellies and spreads)
* Freezing (vegetables and herbs; fruits; meats, poultry, and fish; baby food)
* Drying
* and an appendix which covers canning troubleshooting and helpful and inspirational resources.
The herbed vinegars and introduction to baby food caught my attention, as I haven't seen these in some of the other books.
The verdict: If you already have a boatload of canning and food preservation books, you might want to pass as none of the recipes are super unique (unless you're a cookbook junkie like me and want to get it just for the photos and light reading). But if you're just starting out, Saving the Seasons will inspire you and provide enough guidance to give you confidence to start a lifetime of preserving.
