The Strongest Tribe: War, Politics, and the Endgame in Iraq Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased this book with some apprehension, because I was somewhat disappointed with the author's earlier book, "No True Glory." It rather annoyed me to read a whole slew of gunfights between the Marines and insurgents in Anbar Province but have no maps to give me some sense of how the engagements were unfolding.
Fortunately, Bing West's account of the war up to the present time in Iraq doesn't get down into the weeds like "No True Glory" so the handful of maps he provides are basically adequate for the narrative.
Reading "the Strongest Tribe," I find myself thinking two different things. One is "Finally! we're getting it right in Iraq!" The other is "Why did it take this long to get it right?"
I think West's book is invaluable for anyone who wants (as I so badly did) a good idea of the ebb and flow of the conflict and the various strategies that we employed before finally hitting (or should I say rediscovering) the methods that appear to be working so well over there now: using American soldiers to provide security for the Iraqi population and winning their trust and using that trust to get intelligence on the insurgents and terrorists.
I don't really have any major criticisms of the book. West might give the Marines more attention in his account than their actual share of the fight would justify. But if that is a bias, it's understandable since the Marines were at the forefront of the bloody fights in Fallujah and played the lead role in pacifying Anbar. Moreover, West is a former Marine himself and it is logical he would gravitate toward them and have his best contacts with there as well. In any case, if there's a bit of bias, it's only very slight.
Another thing I really wish would have been a more in-depth discussion of the so-called "Haditha Massacre." West spends about a chapter on the episode, but it's just a quick tour of that event. Those seeking to have better insight into it would do well to watch the Frontline documentary that was on PBS about incident. I do think that West is exactly on point in excoriating the press and politicians like Jack Murtha for rushing to judgment against the accused Marines. I look forward to the first serious book about what happened in that small Iraqi town, because something as complex as what took place there deserves a book.
A final nitpick is an error at the beginning of the book where West lauds General Eisenhower for making the hard call of resisting a British demand for a cross-channel invasion of Europe in 1943. West gets it totally wrong there. It was the United States that wanted this attack, not the British. But that's just a minor failing.
So I would strongly recommend "the Strongest Tribe" both to people in the military and the national security community as well as to Americans who want to have a good solid grasp of what's been going on in Iraq, the mistakes we've made, and the fact that we've turned the corner there.
One thing I can absolutely assure you of is that you won't get that sort of honest perspective reading "reviews" like the one star review someone gave to this book. That "review" has political agenda and close-mindedness written all over it.

The Hunting of the Last Dragon Review

(More customer reviews)As the story opens, our heroes, Jude and Lizzie (aka Jing-wei) are nerving themselves to take on a fire-breathing monster. How they got into (and out of) this predicament makes for an engaging adventure tale. The conceit that the illiterate peasant lad Jude is relating his story to a kindly monk for posterity ratchets the suspense down a notch (we know he will survive the story's hair-raising episodes), but Jordan keeps the page turning as we wonder how he will manage this, as well as creating a mysterious and sympathetic character in Jude's companion, Jing-wei, who he rescues from a horrid life as a freak exhibit in a traveling fair. The gentle teasing by which Jude ends each chapter on a cliff-hanger ("I don't want to make you late for prayers, brother!") is amusing and serves to draw the reader into the surprisingly authentic medieval world. Although I enjoyed the well-realized setting, fast moving plot and touches of humour, I found that the tender relationship between the two friends gave the book its heart. Once again, Jordan has crafted a winner.

Data Communications and Networking (McGraw-Hill Forouzan Networking) Review

(More customer reviews)I'll make two separate sets of comments - one for professors and one for students.
Students first... Forouzan is about as easy to read as any book on the subject. Since Forouzan has done a pretty good job of keeping the text up-to-date, however, you may find it difficult to use a previous edition of the text. I would estimate that about 20% of the material is either new or revised in the 3rd edition. The website also has some pretty good student resources, such as notes and related study tools.
For professors... I have been using the text since its first edition and have no regrets. In the third edition, Forouzan departs from the 7-layered OSI model to something he calls the 5-layered Internet model (Application, Transport, Network, DL, Physical), which may not be "standard", but it certainly makes things a little easier when talking about the Internet and modern computer networks. There seems to be enough quantitative material to satisfy those who wish to take a more engineering-centered approach to data comm, although I'm not sure how this text would fly in a school of engineering (my home is a school of business). There are ample online resources for professors, including powerpoint shows and exam materials. The only other text I would consider as a substitute for Forouzan is the slightly more technical text by Stallings, but as I said, I have never had any regrets about Forouzan.

Flight 427: Anatomy of an Air Disaster Review

(More customer reviews)"Flight 427" is a book that Gerry Byrne can be rightfully proud of. I have been interested in this subject for many years now both as an airline pilot (I flew the 737 for almost two years, and must in all candor say that it was my least favorite of the nine different airliner types that I have flown; In all fairness to Boeing, many of my colleagues seem to really enjoy flying the 737, but after my personal experience with the plane, I still can't understand why) and a student (I wrote my Master's thesis on a quantitative systems safety comparison of 737 and A-320 primary flight control systems.) Of the two books on the market which focus on USAir flight 427 (the other, by Bill Adair, is also excellent) I give this one the slight edge for the average reader or the person most interested in how the NTSB "Party System" functions at a major aviation accident.
Byrne carefully weaves the story of flight 427 in with the earlier United 585 accident (same cause) and the later Eastwind 517 incident (also the same cause) skillfully and with generally quite good technical accuracy (there are a couple of very minor technical errors, but they are inconsequential and would not be noticed by most people.) What I really appreciate about the book is Byrne's breadth of sources in reporting on not only well known and understood matters, but also on very obscure, but important background information like all the early Frontier 737 rudder malfunctions, which few are familiar with.
The real story here is of the frustrating experience of investigating such a complex and politically charged investigation. There is no question that Boeing comes off looking bad by the end of the book, and I have to admit, deservedly so.
The only weakness in the book is the total lack of illustrations. This is a topic that could really use illustrations, particularly when Byrne starts discussing things like the interior functions of the dual-concentric servo valve, which was ultimately the problem here.
This is a great book, and I highly recommend it.

When I listen to this music I remember the angry young man I used to be, and the resentment against the consumption culture that American society wanted me to embrace. And then one day all the things that make you a responsible American house-owning, taxpaying adult overwhelm you and you become part of the machine. Oh well, I can sit in my office and earn money for my boss, listen to the Jam and still be the irresponsible, anti-social, perpetual student who worked at UPS, surfed and drank beer all the time kid that I once was; Even if it is now hidden deep inside the recess of the disguise I have created for myself.
