(More customer reviews)I recently purchased a copy of Great Good Desserts Naturally! by Fran Costigan. I am a strict vegetarian and try to cook and bake using only natural ingredients. This book has great recipes that taste as if they have been made the traditional way with eggs, butter, and sugar. I have made the double fudge brownies with great success, and my skeptical husband even thought they were excellent. I also made the cornbread recipe, which is moister than any of the traditional recipes I have made. This recipe can be turned into cornmeal pancakes or corn muffins as well.
In the book, the author gives several tips about whole food ingredients as well as how to subsitute traditional ingredients with natural alternatives. She discusses appropriate baking utensils and techniques that make this book suitable for novice bakers in addition to experienced ones. She also tells how to modify recipes (e.g. making cupcakes from a cake recipe), and she provides information on how to present the desserts (frosting ideas for cakes, sauce ideas, fillings for cookies). The book contains recipes for cakes, frostings, cookies, frozen desserts, sauces, and more. I would recommend it as an easy way to have healthier snacks and sweets in your diet.

(More customer reviews)There are two things that make this book exceptional. One is that if you know nothing about greeting card writing it covers a lot of territory. The exercises are designed to put you in the frame of mind you will need to be a greeting card writer. And two, the follow up that Mrs. Miller-Louden provides. It's one thing to read a book and have questions, it's another to be offered communication with the author through email and snail mail. And have quick responses to your inquiries. She also has a message board where others can talk to one another about this new career. She is definitely a teacher that cares about her students walking away understanding the material and being able to apply it. (Granted: if you are looking for a literary masterpiece, can't help you. If your looking for a laymans book to get you going on a possible career in greeting cards, then this primer is for you!)

The Oxford Color Italian Dictionary Review

What surprised me was that for such a small dictionary it has had almost every word I've needed to look up. Let me tell you, I've had to find some pretty off-the-beaten-path words! Besides the amazingly eye-friendy blue coloring of the main words, I've appreciated the accurate expressions and idioms in addition to the standard definitions. All around, this book has been indespensable! It's been my money's worth and them some! Though I personally haven't had need for the games and puzzles, I still recommend this selection to anyone who needs a great portable dictionary.

(More customer reviews)I had to buy this book because my five year old daughter keeps checking it out of the library. When I told her she had to check out another book this week she said, "Why, Mom? This is a GREAT book!" That is definitely one to have on our shelf. The pictures are delightful and the repetitive phrasing makes it easy to read yet there are some tough words which she has mastered because she knows the phrasing. I wish every book I purchased would pay off so well. She also said, "Mom, if you look at the pictures you just have to giggle."

Great reviews raving about the author's way with words, his ear for dialect, his ability to paint a stunning, if bleak, portrait of the 'great unwashed' that inhabit these hills that I call home. I grew up within 50 miles of Woodrell's current home, and I'm here to tell you, this is the real thing. That boy's hitting the nail on the head. But if you read further you'll find other reviews. In them, someone will say 'I wasted my money on a book about white trash. I forced myself to finish it'. I'm sorry to see reviews like that about any of Woodrell's books. I could be wrong, but I don't think he's writing books for folks who have to force themselves to finish 'em. He's writing for those of us who relish tales about no-account hillbilly 2-time losers making bad decisions and living to regret it. Consider this a warning, if you're not happy reading about small town yokels who're tired of their boring lives, disgusted with poverty yet unable to escape it, losers plotting revenge on the local gentry for stomping on their dreams, just building up steam and ready to smash the next bossman who looks at them the wrong way...stay away. Do us all a favor and just stick with something you'll enjoy. This stuff's not for you. Spend your money on something sweeter, or with more car chases or whatever you enjoy. Those among you who think you'd like to read well crafted novel's that happen to be about some of life's castaway citizens, books where every word has been considered and all the flab slashed away, c'mon in, the water's fine. Be careful, you want to watch out where you put your feet. Some yokel's been breaking bottles around here. If I catch him at it, I'm gonna skin him alive and roll him in salt. Open up that cooler and hand me one of them there liquid bread bottles, hear?
