Amazing, just amazing.
Take Me to a Circus Tent, The Jefferson Airplane Flight Manual is the ultimate resource guide to JA music. For this flight turn on the seat belt light, put your trays in the upright position and settle because is was a hell of a ride, turbulent and riotous. And Fenton has been able to document the ride in a way that is truly unique in the music retrospective field.
The first section of the book documents every possible show, every performance that was done by the Jefferson Airplanes, including Hot Tuna, Starship and other relatives of JA. It lists the sets, how long the songs were, who introduced the songs, any on stage chatter and any history of the song. It is a mind boggling tribute to the details and minutia that makes up the legend of these rock greats.
The second section of the book is interviews with a dizzying array of people associated with the JA in many ways. Here Fenton's knowledge of musical history soars. He knows the background of everyone and is able to use that to direct interviews in a way very few, if any, other person could do.
Interspersed between the pages are the 93 photos that give faces and glimpses into the people that made this band the timeless rock standard it has become.
I strongly advise that readers check out the author's web site or the discussion at the many sites that address this book. This book will be an excellent investment for any fans of either the Aiplanes and those of classic rock history. It is not an effort that can ever be equaled or duplicated.

Any agent, new or experienced, independent or franchised, big broker or little broker, can benefit from this book!
Shift is truly a guidebook for real estate agents/Realtors old or new, IN ANY MARKET even though it's marketed as (see the title) helping agents through the current "buyer's market". Many agents - with experience limited to the booming "seller's market" we experienced in the US between between 2001 and 2007 - were (and some still are) SHOCKED by the shift in the market and what that did to their business, income, lifestyle, etc. Gary Keller explains what happened (and how it's happened before and will happen again) and what the options are for real estate agents. Those that choose to tough it out and stay in real estate, can learn viable strategies to get leads, convert the leads to contracts, and close and get paid in the current market. In fact, the strategies can (and will) be aptly applied in any market.
Tip/hint: Gary recommends taking the book to a local office supply store and having them spiral bound it so it can be used as a field guide of sorts. VERY GOOD IDEA. Thanks for awesome book-delivered coaching/mentoring Gary!!!

D.R.U.M. -- Discipline, Respect and Unity Through Music Review

D.R.U.M. -- Discipline, Respect and Unity Through Music

When I started teaching music, my mentor teacher taught me something from this book... I had my first successful lesson with my worst 6th graders ever by using something from this book. Jim put not only engaging drumming activities (that can be simplified or modified very easily) into this book, but he put in some fundamentals and tips as well. I took an orff-schulwerk course from him at the Eastman School of Music, and I believe he must be one of the top educators in the country. If you buy this book, you will use it! Check out his other books as well!

Kids love drums! The sight, the sound, the power, and the feel are tremendous motivators for many students. D.R.U.M. is an acronym for Discipline, Respect and Unity Through Music. The original D.R.U.M. group was formed at author Jim Solomon's elementary school in 1995 to provide an ensemble experience for students not involved in any of the regular music groups. The group concept is designed to stress teamwork and self-discipline while learning these intensive percussion ensembles built on music from the United States, Brazil, Africa, and China. Useful for general music classes and special groups, this book is a terrific learning tool with unlimited potential!

Pickles to Relish
If you are an adult or a kid or ever eaten a pickle or wanted a relish, chutney, etc. to add zest to your food and enhance your life, don't waste any time in reading this multi-faceted book. As the author Beverly Ellen Schoonmaker Alfeld notes, "not all the recipes are canning recipes." You can also refrigerate and freeze the many tasty delights. What could be better than a "pickled green walnut on a filet mignon", to "Hot Crocodile Chutney" or "Hot Beekeepr's Relish to zip up your life, health and make you feel good! You'll get insight to a better way of life if you read this book and adopt some of the "Jam Lady's sage advice on everything from one's lifestyle to instructing your kids to give them a more meaningful existence on how and where our food comes from! You will be instructed on how to make a simple pickle, relish, chutney, sauce and a whole lot more. You will be given the history of many foods. There is valuable data included throughout the book. There is verything from the pH of foods, instructions on proper labeling, listings of stores, pickle events, proper canning techniques, safeguards, and how you can modify a recipe like corn relish and make it "extra hot to "not so hot". Information is given about the myriad of sweetners that can be selected for the recipes. There are recipes that don't need any sweetener for people that are intolerant. There is extensive information throughout the book in the form of pictures, charts and appendixes. I highly recommend the "Jam Lady's PICKLES To RELISH book. You will be enriched.

How to Rock Climb, 4th (How To Climb Series) Review

How to Rock Climb, 4th (How To Climb Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is undeniably one of the major "textbooks" on rock climbing, and contains a great deal of useful information. Yet it has some rather disturbing flaws. Firstly, even though I read the 1998 edition, outdated information from earlier editions had not been updated. At times I felt like I was reading a book describing rock climbing in some parallel universe: Long refers to brands and items of gear not currently in existence (what's a Salewa Antz?) and some recommended techniques (tying into a trad anchor with the rope rather than with slings or a cordelette) are very rarely, in my experience, used. The text often makes references which will prove confusing for the beginner, and would benefit from a better glossary. The 1998 edition also has some sections so full of misspellings that they appear to have been written by a quasi-literate person. In summary, everything in this book is good information, but some of it is not entirely relevant to the way climbing is done today, and some of it is presented in an unclear manner.

Washington Square (Wordsworth Classics) Review

Washington Square (Wordsworth Classics)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Washington Square", published in 1880, is not, and will not be, regarded as Henry James's best novel -- the honor would go to "The Portrait of a Lady" or much later works like "The Wings of the Dove" -- but this short but richly woven book deserve our attention. The book is always readable and intriguing while it does not fail to deliver the amazingly realistic characters living in New York City of the 19th century. Certainly, this is the best place for any beginners of James to start.
The book starts with an introduction of a New York physician Dr. Sloper and his only daughter Catherine. While the doctor gained respectable position among the patients, he loses his wife suddenly after the birth of Catherine, who grows up to be a not particularly clever nor beautiful girl. Catherine, painfully shy, becomes a dutiful, but perhaps dull, daughter, the kind of a girl whose awkward behaviors her father approves always with a little detached attitude.
Then, comes a good-looking man Morris Townsend, who has no money but gives a word of "gentleman." But what does that mean when Doctor suspects this is just another fortune hunter, who is seeking for the money Catherine is to inherit after his death? Still, Doctor is half amused, even entertained, by this unexpected visitor who now seems to have gained the love of his daughter. But he didn't expect that Catherine would show surprising obstinate attitude in spite of his threat of disinheriting her.
The book is written, as a whole, with a very tragic note, but as you read on, you will find that, just like Jane Austen's narrator, "Washington Square" has an amusing aspect of comedy at first. The meddling widow Mrs. Penniman, whose wild imagination is one of her weakness, is a good example. She runs around between Morris and Catherine, only to annoy both of them. Henry James's touch when he treats these characters, however, sounds more incisive and even colder than Jane Austen's, if not totally cruel -- and the cruelty is gradually obvious as the plot unfolds.
Our main concern is about Catherine. The story is in itself trite and insignificant (James heard the original episode which the book is based on, in England from actress Fanny Kemble, and the brief note remains), but it is the growth (or change) of the apparently insipid heroine, and the interations between her and other characters (or between those other characters) that always impress us greatly. James's pen ruthlessly cuts into the hearts of those characters, and the intense, skillfully-constructed dialogue which show what is going on in the characters would instantly grip the readers' mind.
Some readers might champion more condensed prose of "The Golden Bowl", deeming "Washington Square" as too lightweight. In a sense, it is, I admit; the novel is not long, and the syntax is very easy to understand (for James, I mean). Still, the book is never dull, always fast-paced (for James, again), and the touching fate of the heroine Catherine is not a thing to be missed.
The novel is turned into films and they are also great, I must add. William Wyler's version is a masterpiece, with Olivia de Havilland/Montgomery Clift/Ralph Richardson trio, but more recent production made in 1997 is also good.

As the wife of a diabetic with a sweet tooth, this book was a wonderful find and is a treasure! The recipes are easy, ingedients are usually ones you have on hand and the results are wonderful. Ball Co. makes a no sugar pectin which is a low methoxy pectin this book refers to quite a bit. It is easy to use in these recipes. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is diabetic or just likes the natural flavor of fruits and vegetables rather than the sugary recipes in regular cookbooks.
