Anderson's near total lack of knowledge about the Seattle musical environment of the late 1980s and early 1990s is stunning, and it is a wonder that any publisher would allow this drivel to see the light of day. It is very clear that little or no original research was done for the writing of "Accidental Revolution."
Additionaly, the author utilizes the kind of smarmy, communications-major, writing style that many sanctimonious-yet-ignorant blabbermouths use to mask the fact that they do not have any insights. Sorry Anderson, cheesy "wink-wink, nudge-nudge" one-liners don't make you sound like an insider; they make you sound like a wannabe.
As far as specific content is concerned, the most egregious part of this book is the "great grunge discography" which includes albums from the Gin Blossoms, Buffalo Tom, Live, and (cough-cough) Everclear! It does not include anything from the Melvins, Skin Yard, or TAD. Need I say more?

Solid Nirvana tunes in a mellow set, the songs are great for the amateur guitarist, not difficult at all, and fun to play when you bring the friends over. While it is not a book for someone who wants to know the story behind the entity that is Pearl Jam, it is definitely for someone searching for wall decorations or just a collection of pictures of one of their favorite bands. Although it is said that this book is out of print, I have seen several of these photo-tear-out books, including this Pearl Jam one, for sale in a store at Pleasure Island in Orlando, Florida, it was about $12.95. I suggest buying two, as I did...one for the wall and one to keep as new.

(More customer reviews)"The story of Pearl Jam" by Brad Morrel, is less a reading book than a photo album. The "history" contained within appears to be just a summary of the highlights in the actual history of PJ up to the release of "No Code." ... I think that most of the info here are cliffnotes from other more insightful and developed books like "None to Fragile" or "Five Against One."
But on the other hand, the pictures contained within are colour, bigger than a letter sized paper, and spread out through 64 pages mostly from the pre-ten, ten, vs, and pre-vitalogy era.
If you are a fan, and do not like reading long books, this is an ideal book for you.
If you are a fan, and dont want text, but want some great early PJ pics, this is a good book for you. And if you want text, get one of the books i mentioned above.
In my case, i own this book for the pictures and "none too fragile" for the text. This suits me well.

I am surprised the Journal has not sued the Hermans for defamation of character!!!
Buy this book for anyone who plays a musical instrument, and they will love you for it...

As a long time collector of poster art, this book is a must have and truly demonstrates Ames Bros leadership in modern graphic design. (More customer reviews)Written in the late 1800's (supposedly), Vitalogy is a tongue in cheek book by today's standards. Vitalogy was written by E.H Ruddock, who was a literary version of a traveling salesman. This leads one to believe that the ideals in this book are tall tales, with the author fully knowing that he was lying to the reader. The basic vibe for a person reading Vitalogy nowadays is that the book is "b.s.", but serves as an interesting look at how America wanted innocense so badly that they created societal propaganda such as Vitalogy in order to force citizens to live as society wanted them to. (Example: find the photo of a young man before and after self-stimulation. The "after" photo is doctored so badly that it is ridiculous to the point of laughter).Vitalogy is the book Ed Vedder from Pearl Jam borrowed excerpts from for liner notes on the Vitalogy album. This book, on the contrary, has NOTHING TO DO WITH PEARL JAM. Nontheless, the book is interesting and I give it 4 stars, just because it has a gritty, nostalgic feel to it.Pearl Jam fan or not, the nostalgia and feel of this book is very interesting and should be read by those who could find interest in such societal"propaganda" that Vitalogy brings forth. I was disappointed at first, due to the fact I honestly thought it was a Pearl Jam book. I later picked up Vitalogy from time to time and started to enjoy it for reasons already described.

(More customer reviews)I'm a huge Pearl Jam fan so I read this book a while ago hoping for some insight into the band. I was sadly dissappointed. While the book has lots of nice photographs, it's hardly worth reading. This book is full of misquotes and distorted facts. If you really like Pearl Jam I suggest you read the book "Five Against One" instead. It's a lot longer but well worth your time.

Pearl Jam: Place/Date Review

(More customer reviews)This book is a great collection of some very artistically done work from some very talented photographers...but it doesn't go too far beyond that. Granted, some of the pictures are actually about something (I love the Drop In the Park shots, so wish I could have been there). And the shots of the band just as people, as friends, those are great, personal depictions, but the artsy blurring effects are definitely a bit much. I don't much see the point in the really grainy black-and-white shots either. Black-and-white is definitely classy, but they could at least be clear. I do like the colored pictures, the close-ups of the silhouettes...those are great. And the posed shots are cool, a lot of them look like they should have been posters. (Although perhaps those aren't "real" enough for some people.) I think this book is overall a great collection of photography, albeit a far too serious one. It seems the attempt to create art instead of just the same lame old press photos superseded the actual point of the book, which was to give the fans a look into the band in a more personal way. But don't accuse Pearl Jam of taking themselves too seriously; anyone who has ever seen a video or read an article about them knows they have a sense of humor. It's the photographers who took this too seriously (and also perhaps some of these reviewers!). One really cool thing about this book, though: it's the first time I've ever seen Dave Krusen, the band's first drummer. Everyone's seen pictures and videos with Dave Abbrusezze and Jack Irons, but Krusen left so soon after recording "Ten" that I don't think he was ever featured in too many photos. So that was interesting. So all in all, I'm glad I got this book, but it's not for everyone. With no words whatsoever except for the places and dates the different pictures were taken, this book better be something you really plan on looking through again and again if you're going to spend your money.
