I have bought beginning harmonica books and watch harp players on you tube for the last 3 years. One of the instructors on you tube recommended Dave's website and he had all of his books online to review. He even has short audio files to listen to before you make a decision to buy. I recommend all of his books. It is like having a music instructor. If you wants to know all of the ins and outs of reading music, learning rhythm, and all of the playing techniques these books are for you. Keep in mind that Dave has 3 levels, so you will need to buy all of his series to progress. Amazon did a great job, they shipped quicker than advertised, they got the order right, and I will buy from them in the future.

Modern Blues Jamtrax Review

Modern Blues Jamtrax
Average Reviews:

This book and CD combination make a very nice practice and learning tool for the aspiring blues player. The book illustrates scales and licks in both standard notation and TAB. Chord progressions are shown for each of the 10 tracks on the CD. Various blues textures and keys are explored. Various rythm patterns are illustrated on the CD as well.
While this material could be used to some advantage by the neophyte, it assumes a basic familiarity with guitar, rythm, and picking basics, and with the blues genre as well. And though it correlates the scale patterns with the tracks in the various keys, it does not explain how to use them to improvise or construct solos (for this reason I withheld a fifth star). It also does not cover topics such as turnarounds, double stops, bends, slides, etc.
"Modern Blues Jamtrax" is best used with other blues instruction and lesson materials. I would highly recommend it for the advanced beginner or intermediate player on its value as a practice aid.

Ultimate Play-Along Rock Guitar Trax (Ultimate Play-Along Series) Review

Ultimate Play-Along Rock Guitar Trax (Ultimate Play-Along Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a strong intermediate player and I bought this book mainly for the backing tracks, not knowing what they were. The book provides music score and some narrative for each of the backing tracks on the CD. The tracks are best described as classic hard rock jams using many different progressions other than I, IV, VI which I appreciate. It opened my mind to other chord progressions.
Each track has a lead intro followed by about 2-3 minutes backing w/o lead guitar. The idea is that you can study the style of the lead and then improvise on your own. The narrative gives you some suggestions, presents some tabs of the scales that should be used and other hints to the soloist approach. I believe there about 10 tracks in total.
This is not for begginers, as you need to have a good understanding of theory, scales, arps and chords to get any pleasure out of this process. I found that I gravitated to about 3 of the songs and spent some time learning some of the riffs and chord progressions. There where a couple that I really like, edited out the solo and ripped them into MP3 and put them on my Tascam guitar trainer. That way, I can play them through my PA and jam along at full strength.
The tracks are of good quality. The book allows you to play along, understand some of the techniques that the soloist used in their version and then just do your own thing. I wish there where more books like this that had more tracks. Since it is a matter of individual preference how many tracks you will enjoy , more would be better. I find it a great way of learning better soloing technique without having the pressure of learning to play a particular riff perfectly for a cover song. I would gladly pay more for a complete volume of say 50 tacks with the same treatment. Instead I have been buying other books like this which has been hit or miss; some being ok and others just not to my taste. If anyone has some recommendations for books like this, send them to me at kevmclau@yahoo.com

The book includes a CD with demonstration solos. On each track the solo drops out and the background continues so the user can play lead. Really good background tracks in a variety of blues styles. Though the book includes complete tabs and notation, the solos are fairly advanced. Actually duplicating them is for reasonably experienced players, though others can pick up some of the licks.

This excellent (and scarce!) book is good for all playing situations. It is unquestionably the ultimate source for traditional guitar players.
Invaluable for new, practicing, working, and intermediate players. The addition of the discography, indexed by tune title, lets you locate a recorded source for any tune in the whole book. Brilliant!
The author taught for several years at the School of Fretted Instruments in New York City.
Highly recommended!

Play Guitar with Coldplay (Guitar Jams Series) Review

Play Guitar with Coldplay (Guitar Jams Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an almost decent product. Mostly I was just impressed with how the musicians who played the instruments on the accompanying CD sound just like Coldplay. The only difference is that there is no Chris Martin vocals...So the first couple tracks are like karaoke.---But I was under the impression that there was also a set of tracks with no guitar at all, just bass and drum. This is not the case. There is just less guitar on the no guitar tracks. So if you want to play along with a band that sounds just like Coldplay to learn their songs, this is good. But even better for that purpose--- the actual Coldplay CD's.
The string by string tuning track is helpful, but that's what a tuner is for-- or just tune to a song.
If you own the albums, I would reccommend just buying the full album tab books for Parachutes and Rush of Blood to the Head and playing along with the actual recordings.

This book has a nice collection of songs. However, it is "perfect bound" and does not like to stay open (when you try to open it and put it on a table to work from). I also bought the book "A Dulcimer Christmas" from the same company. That book is bound in the traditional way, and will stay open. I would have given it a five based on the song collection and the clarity of the tablature. I guess if I had a music stand with props to keep the book open I would find it more useful.

Jam with Carlos Santana Review

Jam with Carlos Santana
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I first heard of this concept from a jazz trumpeter who said he used to practice to "MINUS ONE" versions of songs he liked. It was a similar complete package like the Jam With CD here, except it was on vinyl -- all the parts except for the trumpet part.
I really like this Jam with Carlos Santana CD and appreciate the musicianship on it. It's good for keeping time -- Santana, a great phraser, said he started practicing every morning with a drum machine, and wonder if practicing to a CD like this can be every bit as good. Some of the parts in the Jamwith renditions I even like better than on the Santana recordings. I like that many songs start with the drumsticks marking time. And there's one nice part in Europa where the guitar busts some actual Santana licks, solid-body tones and all. And though I have about a dozen Santana albums, there was at least one song on this CD I'd never heard.
As a nitpicker who learns by rote and solos note-for-note, I agree with a review I saw somewhere that significant sections of the originals were omitted and/or changed -- at least on the songs I know fairly well. In Oye Como Va it's exacerbated by a lack of differentiation between background parts when moving to new sections, that in the originals were part of their flavor and appeal.
There are justifiable omissions, like the ending of Black Magic Woman, which in the original moved from sultry, minor-bluesy pop into a major mode/scale with an entirely different time signature. This fit the 70's "concept album" format and you can really consider it a "between-the-tracks" mini-song, and arguably not part of the song. The organist is allowed a solo on the Jamwith version that indeed can hold a candle to Greg Rolie's. THAT's saying something because this was a definitive Rolie solo. You'll enjoy so much you'll even feel like stopping to listen! I know I did.
But some of the missing, incomplete sections mess me up. I would never play to these in public unless I first learned the Jam-with songs, with their slightly different structures, because it would mean slightly re-learning the songs. Then when you heard them on the radio and jammed to them, you'd be playing it the Jam-With way, i.e., differently. Europa seems to start with just drum beats, widely separated, that are not to give you the count, unlike the other Jamwith songs, but are there so you can play the lead to them.
That's my personality and the guy who I originally saw playing to this Jamwith in public is more relaxed about it. But my guitar work is a bit tighter and in part I attribute this to my over-diligent, perfectionist attitude at playing. I have to admit that Santana has differences in his song structures when playing live.
But I say have fun. These are a phenomenal learning tool. I prefer these to the CD player systems that allow you to play the CDs at different speeds. You can play these Jamwiths anywhere. I use the one I put on my Ipod. I also own a Jam With Satriani which is also very good. Despite my grousing I came to this website looking to buy more Jamwiths. Pity there's no Benson. His backup musicians would probably be hard to emulate.
Even though I almost exclusively use the aural component of this product (practice to the audio only) I highly recommend Jam With Santana for budding and accomplished guitarists.

Carlos Santana's instantly recognisable guitar style brought the rhythms of Afro-Cuban music to generations of people who might otherwise never have heard them. His soulful playing has inspired guitarists the world over for the last three decades, and continues to do so today. The combination of musical notation and guitar tabulature in this book together with backing tracks on the CD gives you the opportunity to learn eight of Carlos' tracks note-for-note and them jam with a professional session band. The track listing reflects some of Santana's most popular recordings, providing something for guitarists to have fun with and improvise with, as well as something to aspire to.

I picked up the trumpet again after a 25 year layoff, and grabbed this book just for some fun stuff to play. The arrangements are fairly easy, and not too taxing on your range -I think the highest note I saw was a 'B'. The CD is better then I thought it would be, and is fun to play along with. It has sections written in where you're given the opportunity to improv. If you just want some fun tunes to play along with, it's worth the money.

ALL STAR BLUEGRASS JAM-ALONG FOR GUITAR BK/CD (Jam Along Book and CD)

Grier's jam book is well worth the price. The tune selection is nicely varied, although the picking style is sometimes repetitious. Usually, when I buy a book like this I find maybe one tune worth learning. In this I found four. I do like Grier's picking style for the most part. He plays the tune melody but inserts jazzy emblishments that add interest and challenge to the tunes. This style is like no other I have heard as an expienced jammer on the U.S. east coast. Great for intermediate and advanced pickers. A determined beginner might handle several tunes, but most are pretty demanding. All tunes played at a medium tempo.
