The Definitive AC/DC Songbook: Guitar Tab (Music Sales America) Review

The Definitive AC/DC Songbook: Guitar Tab (Music Sales America)

I have been playing guitar for seventeen years. I play in an AC/DC cover band, and have so, for eleven years. I have studied Angus and Malcolm Young's guitar playing techniques for many years now and I have to agree with Michael Hunt that these tabs are very inaccurately transcribed. It might give you a head start on how to play "similar versions" of the song. If I was going to pay XX amount of dollars to purchase such a magazine I would appreciate it if I got what I payed for. The transcriptions might teach a basic guitarist a rhythm here or there, but you will not be playing like Malcolm or Angus. So if you are looking to learn how the songs are truly played, then this book is hardly any help. I wont go into technical detail about what I found to be transcribed incorrectly, but I will say whoever did the transcriptions knew nothing about AC/DC or the classic Young brothers style. I was able to borrow this book from my local library, if you can, do so too. In the long run this book will teach you some AC/DC songs. But if you want to play just like Malcolm Young or the worlds oldest schoolboy, then I recommend you look elsewhere then this collection of tab. TO OWEN HOWARD: You have a prime exsample. Because that is only one of many incorect transscibes. the correct way is to play that part of The Jack is;
E-------
B-------
G-------
D-------
A--12---
E--7----
but that is only one guitar. The other plays something different which this magazine does not even reffer to in the slightest way. It says both guitars do the same thing. No they don't.

The Best of Thin Lizzy (Guitar Recorded Version) Review

The Best of Thin Lizzy (Guitar Recorded Version)

This book covers most of Thin Lizzy's best songs - "The Boys are Back in Town", "Cowboy Song", "Don't Beleive a Word","Are You Ready?", "Waiting for an Alibi", "Chinatown", "Warriors", "Jailbreak" (15 songs). It covers multiple guitar parts in detail - all rhythm and lead parts. This is an advanced book.
The "Jam With" series by Total Accuracy ("Jam With Thin Lizzy") is a bit better, but this book covers more songs. 10 of the 15 songs are on "Dedication - Best of Thin Lizzy".
I found a few of the songs in this book avaiable online for "Power Tab Editor" (freeware - get it), but I find this book to be easier to read and more accurate than the tab of the net.

Slayer's Reign in Blood (33 1/3) Review

Slayer's Reign in Blood (33 1/3)

The typical analysis or oral history of SLAYER usually comes down to their passionate fans yelling out "F-KING SLAYER!" or people on the other side that dismiss them as childish. D.X. Ferris has delivered a fascinating read with much more substance. Focused on the undeniable classic thrash album "Reign in Blood", Ferris explores everything about the band from the musical recording of the album, the always bizarre behind the scenes record industry maneuvering, and puts the career of a legendary band into perspective.
A thorough book about an iconic album which is their brutal masterpiece, with quotes from not only the band members and people who worked on the album, but a never-ending stream of metal peers and those influenced by this musical touchstone. A mandatory (suicide) read for every SLAYER fan, and hopefully for those who write them off as Satanic Nazis and don't bother to learn more. A great read.

My son started playing guitar in the Summer of 09. He just got an electric guitar last April and loves playing the "shred" solos. This book is great. The CD w/back ups just makes it that much easier to learn the songs and the timing. Great product...and we bought it used.V

Van Halen are one of most successful American rock bands and this book is a powerful learning tool that will help you extend your stockpile of licks and fills and develop your improvisational skills. The combination of musical notation and guitar tablature in this book together with backing tracks on the CD gives you the opportunity to learn eight of Van Halen's tracks note-for-note and then jam with a professional session band.
