Fruits of the Midwest - A Cookbook and Guide from Harvest to Table Review

Fruits of the Midwest - A Cookbook and Guide from Harvest to Table

I have spent New Years Day happily reading this wonderful book cover to cover. It was a true delight to imagine a summer day with the vivid colors and heady scents of the freshest fruit while pure white snow was just outside my window. I love this book!
Debbie has practical, clear tips for selecting, handling and storing fruit. There is such a variety of recipes with simple and direct instructions. With the addition of fresh apples, frozen or canned fruit, most of the ingredients are already in my pantry. I am able to have summer tastes on my table tonight!
The book is thoughtfully laid out with special hints and tips on the same page where needed. Debbie tells you the differences in varieties of the same fruit, and then writes what works best for her. She tells you what her family prefers as well as valid reasons why others may prefer a different texture or sweetness or way of preserving the fruit. Convenient tabs mark the beginning of each new section. She has valuable lists of substitutions and equivalents.
The photo of Debbie's grandmother on the cover of her book could be my own grandmother or great grandmother and evokes warm, sweet memories for me. It is a "feel-good" book. There is something in here for everyone!
Tonight's dessert will be Debbie's "Hurry-up Apple Dumplings".
Thank you, Debbie, for sharing your wisdom and wealth of information. This will be a treasured and well-used cook book!

Hands-on help on home preserving for the beginner.

Preserving is a hot topic in bookstores everywhere, and Well Preserved is an ideal how-to manual for the novice. With a minimum of equipment, a little time and a little know-how, anyone can transform some beautiful fresh produce into delicious homemade jams, pickles, relishes and chutneys for year-round enjoyment. Homemade preserves have a lower salt and sugar content than those found at the grocery store, and the home cook will have the comfort of knowing precisely which ingredients went into those jars.

Mary Anne Dragan gives expert advice on equipment, selecting and preparing produce, food safety and storage. Her easy-to-follow recipes range from sweet preserves (jams, jellies, marmalades, conserves and fruit sauces) and savory condiments (pickles, relishes, chutneys and ketchups) to main dishes and desserts that use preserves as an ingredient. Some of the 150 recipes are:

Gingered pear jam
Pickled asparagus
Carrot and coconut chutney
Lovely lavender vinegar
Lamb chops with mint vinaigrette
Raspberry vinegar sorbet.

Home preserving is easy using this book, and the results are tasty.

ALL STAR BLUEGRASS JAM-ALONG FOR BANJO BK/CD (Homespun Tapes) Review

ALL STAR BLUEGRASS JAM-ALONG FOR BANJO BK/CD (Homespun Tapes)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Here's my first impression of this book/CD:
You get a TAB book with arrangements for 21 "essential" tunes. The songs are in different keys, and for many of them you have to use a capo. There are even three waltzes. The TABs are first basic versions, then solo/up the neck versions. The up the neck versions are often in melodic style. The TABs seems very good, and a little different from what you find in Janet Davis "You Can Teach Yourself Banjo".
Then to the CD. There is one track for each song. Each track has bass, guitar and mandolin all the way through. First, the song is played with banjo in a basic version, then up the neck, then backup banjo (mostly pinch) and then without any banjo - you jam along yourself. Tempo is moderate to slow.
Tony Trischka's banjo playing is really beautiful. It is very clean and right on time all the way. You will enjoy just listening to the CD. His banjo sounds great!
Sound quality is great, but you might like or dislike that the backup band is in the left channel and the banjo alone to the right. The benefit of this, is that you can listen to the left channel only to get the backing band playing without Tony Trischka.
The really great new thing about this book/CD, is that there are versions for banjo, fiddle, mandolin, guitar and bass. This must be the best way to start a bluegrass band. Let each band member rehearse with their own book. When you meet, you are all ready to jam!

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Jams, Jellies & Preserves Review

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Jams, Jellies and Preserves

I cook quite a bit but have never made jelly. I only remember my mother's way with pounds of fruit, parrafin, dozens of jars and a mess for days. But this isn't it!! This is not your mother's jelly making book! I can't believe how easy it is -- and the recipes in this book all make small batches -- usually around 6 or 8 jars! My favorite so far is the port wine spice jelly but there are so many chutneys and jams I want to try. I can't believe how great this recipe list looks and in an Idiot's Guide! I'll start paying more attention to these smart little orange books now.

My son started playing guitar in the Summer of 09. He just got an electric guitar last April and loves playing the "shred" solos. This book is great. The CD w/back ups just makes it that much easier to learn the songs and the timing. Great product...and we bought it used.V

This pamphlet covers the essentials of creating Jams and jellies. It is not a deep scientific journey, but if you want to get started with your own jams and jellies, it is a great start. As with all Storey's Country Bulletins, it gives the raw essentials and no more. I have purchased over a dozen of these pamphlets and have not been disappointed in their content

Culture Jam: The Uncooling of America Review

Culture Jam: The Uncooling of America
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I currently live in Japan where I have seen the dark side of the American Cultural Machine. Thousands of years of tradition have been swallowed up in a couple years by a dominant American system that uses insidious and underhanded techniques to sell its products and become rich. This is a wonderful attack on the current dominant paradigm- Work Work Work Buy Buy Buy(and if this continues unabated we are asking for a global environmental nightmare). I am not an environmentalist but this book uses solid arguments and puts forth interesting ideas. PLEASE READ THIS BOOK. It will give you a chance against the mega-corporations. Take back your mind and free will! This book is fun, interesting, and it could one day be seen as the book that started the newest counter culture: The Anti-consumer.

Jellies, Jams & Chutneys Review

Jellies, Jams and Chutneys
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The author is English, so you will find lots of unusual jam and chutney recipes here that you wouldn't see in an American cookbook. The one drawback is that the canning techniques used are foreign to most Americans, and not USDA compliant, but I say just use the recipe and can using the instructions on the USDA website if you are concerned.
