A Garden of Thoughts: My Affirmation Journal (Journals) Review

A Garden of Thoughts: My Affirmation Journal (Journals)
Average Reviews:

Each page of this book contains an affirmation, along with space to write a few lines, and record the day, date and time of your entry. You can either use the space to write your thoughts on the affirmation itself, or use it to jot a few lines about anything on your mind.
The affirmations themselves are inspiring and thought-provoking. Physically, the book is small enough to fit easily into a large purse or knapsack, and its hard cover is beautifully decorated. The spiral binding also makes it easy to write in for lefties. The only drawback that I can see is that the space allowed for filling in the day, date and time is a bit small for those of us with larger handwriting.
If you're working with affirmations and self-esteem issues, this is a great tool.

The Jain Path: Ancient Wisdom for the West Review

The Jain Path: Ancient Wisdom for the West

Jainism is an ancient faith full of profound wisdom. However, it is little known and understood in the West. Aidan Rankin has done an insightful translation of the faith and its core values, comparing them with western philosophy and science lucidly and with painstaking detail. It is a very accessible book, ideal for those interested in understanding Indian wisdom and its modern-day relevance, but trained and raised in the West. It is a genuine search for truth and wisdom which is inclusive of the spiritual realm. It recognises the openness, humility and authenticity of Jainism and is a great window for the liberal seeker of wisdom.

Jainism is one of the world's oldest religions, and perhaps the most demanding, rational and radical of all of them, attaching a great importance to individual responsibility. Today we are questioning our own inherited values and also rediscovering ancient traditions. We are looking for continuity and balance-a return to the centre. Understanding of Jain principles can point us towards the elusive paradigm shift, giving spiritual and intellectual strength to a new global ethic of compassion and interdependence.

The Principles: Happiness and Integrity in Love, Health, Parenting, and Work Review

I've never gone to AA or other 12-step programs but I was intrigued by this book because it uses ideas from those programs to help normal folks. I'm using the book to work on improving my dating life. Will it work? We'll see but it really gave me a new outlook. Nicely written with a series of characters who show how to use The Principles in real life.

Nothing Is Too Good to Be True Review

I am a fan of John Randolph Price, especially his The Abundance Book. If your a fan of Ernest Holmes, Catherine Ponder or even modern day new thought teachers like Rev. Michael Beckwith, then try this book. I find that as I open myself up to hearing Truth principles told from a different tone or in another way, often times thins come together in my consciousness. Anything that does that is well worth the try. A good addition to any library.

In his most comprehensive book, bestselling author John Randolph Price takes us back to 9500 B.C., when the Grand Magicians came forth, on to 500 B.C. when the "Great Ones" appeared, and continues to trace the life-changing Principles of New Thought right up to the present time. In Part I, Price focuses on the Grand Paradigm and how to unlock the doors to our Divine Constitution. He reveals the Secret of the Ages, the bridge to connect heaven and earth, the ministering angels, and how to work with the Great Law by directing the cosmic energies. He then brings it all together in a formula for Completeness-Mind into Manifestation, Divine Cause and Divine Effect.Part II shows us the proof of what New Thought can do-the sweet mysteries of life and the fruits of the harvest. Nothing is too good to be true is a fact, and a miracle will follow when we remove the dam holding back the great river of life and open the blinds that have shut out the light of the shining Truth within.Price says, "Let's do that, and then spread the word that all things are indeed possible. The people are waiting for the Good News."

Suffering Is Optional: Three Keys to Freedom and Joy Review

Suffering Is Optional: Three Keys to Freedom and Joy

"It takes courage to look deeply into oneself," Cheri Huber writes in the Introduction to this book. She has been practicing Zen meditation for nearly thirty years. This book is the insightful culmination of both her own experience on the cushion, and the results of a 12-week course she taught on suffering. As children we experienced life by living in each moment. As adults we have been conditioned to suffer: "we want what we don't get, aren't satisfied with what we do get, are separated from those or that which we love, and are forced to endure those and that which we do not love," Huber writes. "We suffer when we resist life. We suffer when we believe life should be different. We suffer when we think there is something wrong with life that needs to be changed or fixed." The "clamor of modern life and the endless chatter in our heads" (p. 83) restrict our ability to see beyond our conditioned suffering and return to our childlike sense of wonder in everything we experience.
"It took us a while to get trained in these faulty belief systems," Huber writes, "and it will take us a while to unhook ourselves. We sit still, we see the conditioning and the sabotage for what it is, and we find the courage not to go back to old, familiar, hurtful ways" (p. 16). These "automatic, conditioned, karmic patterns" steal our time, our joy, our good feeling toward ourselves. They steal our life (p. 21). The "three keys" to ending our suffering involve paying attention to everything (pp. 3-54), believing nothing (pp. 57-92), and not taking anything personally (pp. 95-131).
For anyone interested in looking deeply into the nature of suffering and learning how to return to the present moment, Huber's recommended book offers "helpful awareness, helpful insight, helpful friend" (p. 101).
G. Merritt

Suffering Is Optional: Three Keys to Freedom and Joy centers around three basic aspects of Zen practice: pay attention, believe nothing, and don’t take anything personally. As ending suffering requires that one sees how suffering happens, the book urges readers to be willing to be quiet and pay attention to the process of suffering in effort to see each moment as an opportunity to step beyond illusion into freedom. It also argues that examining beliefs, abandoning them, and returning attention to the present is essential to ending suffering, as is living in the awareness that nothing in the universe is personal.

Until Today : Daily Devotions for Spiritual Growth and Peace of Mind Review

Until Today : Daily Devotions for Spiritual Growth and Peace of Mind

This was so moving for me. I am just recently out of a bad relationship, one of many. A friend shared with me a copy of this book before I bought it myself. Iyanla touches on the deepest parts of my heart, and shows me that I am not alone. Coming from a not so good childhood...and thinking as I grew up that men were always going to hurt me in the end, therefore never allowing myself to honestly open up and trust one, I have just been going through the motions of a relationship for years. Never understanding why it is that I just cant seem to find "happiness". And she, very vividly, explains that we all have a past but we can't allow it to ruin our future! And only now in retrospect, with the aid of this book showing me and allowing me to really understand, can I see that I was doing just that. If you are not sure about where to go for help, or unsure of how you can get beyond your "skeletons in the closet", like many of us, than this is definitely for you! She is helping me to find myself all over again from the inside out....Healing the mind, body and soul.

Just Add Buddha: Quick Buddhist Solutions for Hellish Bosses, Traffic Jams, Stubborn Spouses, and Other Annoyances of Everyday Life Review

Just Add Buddha: Quick Buddhist Solutions for Hellish Bosses, Traffic Jams, Stubborn Spouses, and Other Annoyances of Everyday Life
Average Reviews:

If you're just starting out, this book is a wonderfully simple, accessible, straightforward way to ease yourself into Buddhism without all the mysticism favored in other texts. Laced with humor, this book makes Buddhism seem more do-able: full of practical tidbits for daily use in real life, such as coping with people you can't stand, remaining calm when politicians tick you off, or dealing with that last slice of pizza you really shouldn't have but want all the same. This is the most user-friendly book on Buddhism for absolute beginners that I've seen, and the writing style is humorous, personal, and honest. I've read his earlier book, "What Would Buddha Do?", and I like this book, its content, and its format even better.

Written for spiritual seekers who deal with unenlightened coworkers and inconsiderate bank tellers more often than Zen masters and Tibetan monks, this book demonstrates the practical side of Buddhism. Author Franz Metcalf shows how to weave simple vows, quick rethinks, instant relaxations, fast visualizations, and many other stripped-down Buddhist practices into every area of life. Individually, Metcalf's techniques work as quick fixes for specific dilemmas, but woven together, they gradually strengthen one's spiritual base when one day a habitual way of being has been quietly transformed. While not written to impress pure Buddhists, this book takes Buddhism seriously. Approachable sections on Buddhism's rich tradition and a sprinkling of quotes from ancient scripture and contemporary teachers connect the book's practices to the deeper wisdom underlying them. Always, Just Add Buddha remains squarely focused on daily life, drawing out the most practical aspects of Buddhism.
