Modern Blues Jamtrax Review

Modern Blues Jamtrax

This book and CD combination make a very nice practice and learning tool for the aspiring blues player. The book illustrates scales and licks in both standard notation and TAB. Chord progressions are shown for each of the 10 tracks on the CD. Various blues textures and keys are explored. Various rythm patterns are illustrated on the CD as well.
While this material could be used to some advantage by the neophyte, it assumes a basic familiarity with guitar, rythm, and picking basics, and with the blues genre as well. And though it correlates the scale patterns with the tracks in the various keys, it does not explain how to use them to improvise or construct solos (for this reason I withheld a fifth star). It also does not cover topics such as turnarounds, double stops, bends, slides, etc.
"Modern Blues Jamtrax" is best used with other blues instruction and lesson materials. I would highly recommend it for the advanced beginner or intermediate player on its value as a practice aid.

Forest Gate: A Novel Review

Forest Gate: A Novel
Average Reviews:

In the old council flats of London, a tragic event ripples through gang and racial warfare. James, a local black British teen from a *successful*crack-dealing family, and his best friend, Ashvin, a poet-loving Somali refugee, jump off a towering building, nooses around their necks, in a suicide pact. Ashvin dies and James survives. Ashvin's sister, Armeina (Meina), hooks up with James in shared grief to forge a tentative but tender friendship. This is their story.
There is a lot of potential in this plaintive novel of redemption. It has heart, and it murmurs. It doesn't quite sing, though. The story is narrated largely through Meina, with a few sections by James and other characters. The primary problem is that the author didn't adequately distinguish the separate voices of James and Meina--they are too similar. Even the cadence is synonymous, which you wouldn't expect from two people from separate countries and disparate backgrounds. Meina was raised in an educated home, by intellectual parents, and witnessed their terrifying, horrifying massacre at the hands of the Ethiopians during civil war strife. James was reared by the horrors and betrayals of his family and neighborhood. The lack of narrative distinction distracted and removed me from the immediacy of the story and conferred an unnatural tenor.
The book was described as tautly constructed, written with a controlled rage. I disagree. Rather, the voices were a bit precious and lacking in the subtext necessary for the reader to register the contained rage. There was restraint, but it was unintentional. The wattage was dimmed by authorial trepidation, as if Akinti was unsure of asserting the fury of his characters. This created a languid tone and lack of muscle in the prose delivery. It felt like he was playing it safe to ensure that we connected with and liked the characters. I would have preferred that he liberate himself from that self-conscious mode and get out of his own way.
Interestingly, his graphic scenes are very well done, crafted with menacing weight. They were not gratuitous. On the contrary, they exploded with tormenting finesse, like a coiled thunder. It permeated the prosaic air with a crackling heat. The violence that the Somalians endured during more than dozen civil wars is heartbreaking. And the devestrating terrors perpetrated on the youth in this London neighborhood are merciless and harrowing.
If this debut novel went through a few more drafts, it could be a dazzling, evocative story, as Akinti's talent is evident. I look forward to seeing how he evolves.

21st Century Guitar Rock Shop 3 (Warner Bros. Publications 21st Century Guitar Course) Review

21st Century Guitar Rock Shop 3 (Warner Bros. Publications 21st Century Guitar Course)

I am a guitar teacher and I use this series in my classes. Most of my students are children in elementary or middle school. I found this series after an extensive search for rock guitar method books that don't have inappropriate lyrics in them. I rejected over 100 books because they contain lyrics that would be inappropriate for children. When you are listening to the songs, you have no idea what the lyrics are, but when you are working on a song with students, you read those lyrics over and over and over again (and your students read the lyrics every time they practice, which hopefully they are doing well and often), and I don't want to contribute to the delinquency of minor children.
The Rock Shop series starts with simple riffs and rhythms, then becomes pretty theory intensive, with lots of chord theory and scales. This series has cool-sounding exercises that are based on popular rock songs. It does not include full length songs, you will need to look elsewhere for those.
This series moves into more complex fingering and rhythms fairly quickly. I use this one for my middle-school and older students. For my younger students I start with Brown's Rock Guitar for Kids to develop hand strength and rhythm, then move into this series. Beginning guitarists who haven't yet developed their hand strength, coordination, and sense of rhythm may find it difficult to play the first few exercises. I have my students do exercises to develop these skills before we tackle the beginning exercises.
This series, like most guitar series, is best used under the guidance of a teacher, or at least a friend who knows how to play guitar and read music. I think it would be confusing and frustrating for someone trying to learn guitar on their own.
In summary, this book is perfect for use in lessons, particularly with students who are underage. It is also useful for someone who already plays guitar and has some music reading ability and wants to develop their rock theory and technique.

Learn Albanian: Mesoni Shqip Review

Learn Albanian: Mesoni Shqip

(More customer reviews)
Cezar Kurti's "Learn Albanian" is a very useful tool for those who are interested in learning the Albanian language. It is broken up into 40 lessons, with two review sections as the 10th and 20th lessons, respectively; also, the last two lessons are just translating passages to put to use what all the previous lessons have taught. While it is covers a great deal of the language, it must be noted that no one book can fully cover all the grammar and vocabulary of a foreign language. Nevertheless, all the major aspects are well covered, and will allow for sufficient usage when learned. The lessons themselves follow the paradigm of starting off with a passage in Albanian, with its translation below. This is proceeded by grammar lessons, exercises for the grammar, and concludes with vocabulary. The paragraphs cover a variety of situations that one would most likely encounter and need to use the language - restaurants, hotels, etc.. It is effective in helping the learner to become aware of how Albanian is expressed in conversation. Another "bonus" to the paragraphs, is that a good deal about Albania and its history is learned as well. The grammar lessons are broken down in each section to provide the learner with just enough information that (s)he will not be overwhelmed. And the vocabulary is thorough for each section. There is even a brief Albanian-English/English-Albanian dictionary at the very end. The main reason that I did not give a 5th star to this book, is that I felt - even though the grammar exercises were mostly readily comprehendible - there should also be an "answer key" as a means of confirmation. But overall, this book is very worthwhile. To learn more Albanian vocabulary, I also recommend the pocketbook "Albanian-English/English-Albanian Dictionary & Phrasebook" by Ramazan John Hysa - this for more practical vocabulary. But for in depth vocabulary, I also recommend "Albanian-English Dictionary" (Hippocrene Comprehensive) and "Oxford English-Albanian Dictionary".

Once you've seen the cover of this book, you've seen it all. All of the pumpkins throughout this book are simply variations of the same theme. If you're after recipes, you'll probably like the book okay, but if you're after carving inspiration, look elsewhere.
