This is an excellent product! The jam tracks on the CD are excellent quality - it's like having your own band to jam along with! I had previously purchased the Hal Leonard - Eric Clapton Signature Licks DVDs done by Doug Boduch and really enjoyed them. I was pleased to see the Play-Along volumes 24 and 41 jam tracks were also done by Doug Boduch. They are both excellent and I would highly recommend them. They accompany the DVDs perfectly. I would like to see more Guitar Play-Along volumes produced by Hal Leonard with Doug Boduch - they are terrific.

Jimi Hendrix Musician (Book) Review

Jimi Hendrix Musician (Book)
Average Reviews:

I would like to recommend Keith Shadwick's "The Musician" because IMHO it tops everything that was written so far on Jimi.(I'm not bribed by the publishers,by the way). It's very informative, very objective with lots of eyecatching photos. Plus the designer layout ( which makes it look beautiful either on your bookshelf or on a coffee table even if not read :) ;)
What makes it more interesting is the fact, that the final section - devoted to analysis of Jimi's gadgets, guitars, amplifiers, etc is written by High'n'Mighty Mr Douglas J.Noble - the man behind Univibes. And although I'm regrettably a non-musician, I didn't feel like sleeping at this final section
because it was written in a "mentally digestible" way for a layman. What is also worth underlining is that author doesn't dwell on sensationalistic or shady circumstances around Hendrix's life leaving them to over-excited screeming teenagers (or to representants of a yellow journalism). Contrary to the author of this year's Hendrix bio - Cross, Shadvick isn't a sensationalist. Moreover he can turn on a pretty sentence many a time, an ability Cross is devoid of. (Well, these two reasons alone make "The Musican" a perfect companion to "Room Full of Mirrors").The only point to pick on, is huuuge size and tiny, tiny print.

Jimi Hendrix: Musician presents a completely fresh look at Hendrix by tracing his musical history and examining him as a guitarist, composer, and singer. Hendrix was a larger-than-life figure, and previous accounts have tended to obscure the role of his musical genius. This book places the visionary musician within the historical context of the 1960s and the years before and after his rise to fame, and within the musical and cultural events during all stages of his career, providing fascinating new clues about how he created his musical masterpieces. Hendrix expert Douglas J. Noble contributes a special examination of the instruments and equipment Hendrix used in his quest for more expressive and exciting sounds. 300 color and black-and-white photographs make this a visual celebration of the genius who created modern rock guitar.

I have bought beginning harmonica books and watch harp players on you tube for the last 3 years. One of the instructors on you tube recommended Dave's website and he had all of his books online to review. He even has short audio files to listen to before you make a decision to buy. I recommend all of his books. It is like having a music instructor. If you wants to know all of the ins and outs of reading music, learning rhythm, and all of the playing techniques these books are for you. Keep in mind that Dave has 3 levels, so you will need to buy all of his series to progress. Amazon did a great job, they shipped quicker than advertised, they got the order right, and I will buy from them in the future.

Modern Blues Jamtrax Review

Modern Blues Jamtrax
Average Reviews:

This book and CD combination make a very nice practice and learning tool for the aspiring blues player. The book illustrates scales and licks in both standard notation and TAB. Chord progressions are shown for each of the 10 tracks on the CD. Various blues textures and keys are explored. Various rythm patterns are illustrated on the CD as well.
While this material could be used to some advantage by the neophyte, it assumes a basic familiarity with guitar, rythm, and picking basics, and with the blues genre as well. And though it correlates the scale patterns with the tracks in the various keys, it does not explain how to use them to improvise or construct solos (for this reason I withheld a fifth star). It also does not cover topics such as turnarounds, double stops, bends, slides, etc.
"Modern Blues Jamtrax" is best used with other blues instruction and lesson materials. I would highly recommend it for the advanced beginner or intermediate player on its value as a practice aid.

Ultimate Play-Along Rock Guitar Trax (Ultimate Play-Along Series) Review

Ultimate Play-Along Rock Guitar Trax (Ultimate Play-Along Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a strong intermediate player and I bought this book mainly for the backing tracks, not knowing what they were. The book provides music score and some narrative for each of the backing tracks on the CD. The tracks are best described as classic hard rock jams using many different progressions other than I, IV, VI which I appreciate. It opened my mind to other chord progressions.
Each track has a lead intro followed by about 2-3 minutes backing w/o lead guitar. The idea is that you can study the style of the lead and then improvise on your own. The narrative gives you some suggestions, presents some tabs of the scales that should be used and other hints to the soloist approach. I believe there about 10 tracks in total.
This is not for begginers, as you need to have a good understanding of theory, scales, arps and chords to get any pleasure out of this process. I found that I gravitated to about 3 of the songs and spent some time learning some of the riffs and chord progressions. There where a couple that I really like, edited out the solo and ripped them into MP3 and put them on my Tascam guitar trainer. That way, I can play them through my PA and jam along at full strength.
The tracks are of good quality. The book allows you to play along, understand some of the techniques that the soloist used in their version and then just do your own thing. I wish there where more books like this that had more tracks. Since it is a matter of individual preference how many tracks you will enjoy , more would be better. I find it a great way of learning better soloing technique without having the pressure of learning to play a particular riff perfectly for a cover song. I would gladly pay more for a complete volume of say 50 tacks with the same treatment. Instead I have been buying other books like this which has been hit or miss; some being ok and others just not to my taste. If anyone has some recommendations for books like this, send them to me at kevmclau@yahoo.com

Jimi Hendrix: Electric Gypsy Review

Jimi Hendrix: Electric Gypsy
Average Reviews:

Forget about the photo-filled leaflets produced by McDermott/Kramer and Mitch Mitchell. "Electric Gypsy" is the only "real" Hendrix biography available.
Shapiro avoids the usual trap of obsessing over his subject, and gets down to the business of telling the story of an amazing life. Even more incredibly, Shapiro writes in such matter-of-fact language that Jimi's life seems real. A far cry from the cosmic freakshow that is Michael Fairchild (see the liner notes to "Blues").
Yes, Jimi Hendrix was human. "Electric Gypsy" portrays him as a human, not a god. If you want to read about Jimi's life without the clutter of some massive cosmic conspiracy, start here.

Jimi Hendrix: Sessions: The Complete Studio Recording Sessions, 1963-1970 Review

Jimi Hendrix: Sessions: The Complete Studio Recording Sessions, 1963-1970
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm stretchiiingg here to make it to 4 stars. 3 to 3.5 is probably more accurate. I found the 2 stars of the previous review to be excessively harsh, so I poured on a little bit of extra love for the authors. I simply don't find this book to be all that bad - it's a decent resource. Had it been combined with Steven Roby's Black Gold, it would have become a bonafide winner. Alas, instead I fear that much of the intimate details the previous reviewer yearns for has been lost into the purple haze of time - and perhaps that aspect should have been captured more clearly. I remember reading elsewhere (Guitar Player? Guitar?) an interview with a player on Electric Ladyland, maybe Jack Cassady. Anyway, he mentioned that during an all-night session, the engineer fell asleep twice at the console and of the tape reel ran out while the band played on. Apparently Jimi gave him a real chewing out the second time. It would be nice to have more of that history, but as mobile as Jimi was on tour, he was equally mobile as a recording artist. For the shortness of his career, he certainly recorded at a huge assortment of studios. When you think of that, it makes it all the more reasonable to dredge up the history, with so many people involved, many of them transient and some now passed on.
So the bottom line is that I find this to be a pretty good book. Not necessarly the be-all and end-all tome it might have been, but considering the time period and the circumstances, really, a decent quality, well written book.

Jimi Hendrix is universally recognized as the greatest rock 'n' roll guitar player of all time. But until now, the story of how he made his amazing music has never been told. Jimi Hendrix: Sessions is the first book to take us inside the studio and reveal, album by album and track by track, how his songs were born and shaped into the classics they would become. Hendrix biographer John McDermott, working with Hendrix's producer Eddie Kramer and bass player Billy Cox, recreates in extraordinary day-by-day detail the making of every one of Hendrix's songs. Based on firsthand accounts by people who were there and on hundreds of hours of unreleased tapes, this book reveals what went into the creation of "Purple Haze", "Foxey Lady", "All Along the Watchtower", and Hendrix's many other masterpieces. It explains how Hendrix manipulated the primitive studio technology of his time to achieve his unprecedented sounds, and it shows the new heights toward which he was reaching at the time of his death. Beginning with Hendrix's legendary journeyman sessions for the Isley Brothers and other soul greats, and continuing through his last work, this is the authoritative treatment of Hendrix as musician that admirers have long awaited. Illustrated with over one hundred photographs, handwritten lyrics, and studio memorabilia, Jimi Hendrix: Sessions is a loving and timeless tribute to the electric guitar's greatest master.

Honored as a "historic rock and roll landmark" by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, Austin City Limits is the longest-running popular music series in American television history. ACL began in 1974 by featuring original Texas music that ran the gamut from western swing and Texas blues to Tejano, progressive country, and rock and roll. By the time the show celebrated its thirty-fifth anniversary in 2009, its coverage encompassed unique regional, national, and even international performers in an eclectic, ever-expanding range of genres. ACL has also broadened its live audience beyond its iconic studio on the University of Texas campus with the annual Austin City Limits Music Festival, a three-day extravaganza that spotlights some 150 bands and attracts more than 200,000 fans.

Austin City Limits captures the excitement and energy of the show in photographs by ACL's longtime still photographer, Scott Newton. The images span ACL's first thirty-five years, with special emphasis on legendary artists such as Johnny Cash, Ray Charles, Leonard Cohen, and Willie Nelson, and the most compelling contemporary performers and bands from the past ten to fifteen years, including Coldplay, John Mayer, Elvis Costello, Pearl Jam, David Byrne, The Flaming Lips, Wilco, Lucinda Williams, and Norah Jones. Proving that he has few peers among photographers of live music, Newton's images deliver amazing glimpses into the intimate, revealing, and powerful moments in each artist's performance. They also depict the direct and potent connection between performer and audience that has always been a hallmark of Austin City Limits.

Black Gold: The Lost Archives of Jimi Hendrix Review

Black Gold: The Lost Archives of Jimi Hendrix
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ever wonder who jammed with who? This book helps you to find out. This book both a comprehensive list of all recordings of Jimi and his band, as well as an intimate look at the lifestyle of one of America's greatest musicians. I skipped over a lot of the lists and dove into the narratives that told stories of Jimi jamming with Janis Joplin, Eric Clapton (Jimi is supposedly the only guitarist to ever play Clapton off-stage), The Who and many other greats. What I enjoyed most about the book was the details about Jimi learning to play the guitar and his first gigs. Jimi is a musician that stayed true to his roots and his own unique style.
I only gave this book 3 stars because, unless you know absolutely nothing about Jimi Hendrix or some of the other musicians in the book, much of what you read you are likely to already know. Redding included many well known anecdotes as filler for his archival list, which is admirably constructed and researched. The only problem is, is that much of what is on the list is unavailable to the public.
Still, if you're a Jimi fan, you have to read it. After all, it's a book about Jimi.

Black Gold: The Lost Archives of Jimi Hendrix is the first comprehensive biography to authenticate the lost sessions, previously unknown recorded collaborations, and rare film/video documents of one of the most innovative and influential rock guitarists in music history. Hendrix's life is celebrated through exclusive interviews with people who knew him well, including his father, Al Hendrix, musicians Carlos Santana and John McLaughlin, his lover and close companion Kathy Etchingham, and many others. Author Steven Roby sifts through a wealth of unreleased and commercially unavailable studio, live, and home recordings to chronicle every stage of Jimi Hendrix's legendary career. In each instance, he tells the reader whether the event was documented and if it is available. In several tragic instances, the recordings are lost forever. Black Gold is the first book to offer a comprehensive analysis of Hendrix's unfinished album, First Ray of the New Rising Sun. Three attempts have been made so far to "finish" it, and the author explains why none have succeeded. The book also explores Hendrix's journeys into jazz with Miles Davis, John McLaughlin, and Rahsaan Roland Kirk; his excursions into blues with B. B. King, Johnny Winter, and Buddy Guy; and his backing of early rap pioneers The Last Poets. Black Gold features a foreword by Noel Redding, Hendrix's bass player from 1966 to 1969, as well as 45 photos, including several rare and never-before-published shots.

Strength of a Woman: The Phyllis Hyman Story Review

Strength of a Woman: The Phyllis Hyman Story
Average Reviews:

I must first thank Mr. Michael for writing such an in-depth but sensitive biography of the late great Phyllis Hyman. Everything from her poverty-stricken childhood to her tumultous relationship with Arista Records' boss Clive Davis to her never-ending battle with chronic depression and bipolar disorder is covered. It's truly sad to think that someone as talented and gifted as Phyllis was unable to overcome her personal demons (despite really tring to). Sadly, we now know that (for all her beauty and talent) Phyllis was a tortured soul whose inner pain and insecurity led her to self-destructive behavior--unfortunately, those around her wouldn't (or couldn't) understand why. If you are a Phyllis Hyman fan you really should get this book but know that it IS heartbreaking as it is (to some degree) like watching a home video of her childhood up to her suicide at the age of 45. In retrospect, the real reason why Phyllis sounded so convincing on romantic ballads which dealt with pain, betrayal and lost love was because their lyrics mirrored her own experiences.

The story of singer Phyllis Hyman is brought to light in the powerful new biography Strength Of A Woman: The Phyllis Hyman Story by Jason A. Michael. Hyman's 20-year career, which included the release of eight albums as well as a Tony nomination and Theater World Award for her Broadway turn in Sophisticated Ladies, was brought to a tragic end by her suicide June 30, 1995, just hours before she was due to take the stage at the legendary Apollo Theatre. In the spotlight, Hyman's breathtaking voice and stunning beauty shone brightly. But off stage, after the applause and the laughter produced by her bawdy humor had faded, Hyman spent her days and nights engaged in an exhausting battle against bipolar disorder. Complicating its crippling effects was Hyman's addiction to drugs and alcohol, which she tried repeatedly to kick, and the demands and constraints of being a female African-American entrepreneur in an industry controlled by white men.But though she ultimately chose to extricate herself from the pain, she did so not before leaving a legacy of beautiful music that will last and live on forever as a true testament to the 'strength of a woman.'
