If you want a "just the facts, ma'am" type of cookbook this is not for you. However, beyond the good range of simple but inspiring recipes, it was the stories and pictures that are mixed in that really made this book for me. (NB: I didn't mind the colour-coding of the recipes as there is an alphabetical index in the back)
I will definitely be adding more of Tessa Kiros in my cookbook collection.

Well Preserved: A Jam Making Hymnal Review

I first saw one of Ms. Hassol's recipes in the New York Times and made it immediately - it was the peach ginger marmalade. It was so successful, I immediately bought the book. Most of her combinations are quite inspired - although there are too many that rely on ginger - that I was inspired to try some of my own new concoctions. However, I agree with other reviewers that the 1.5 packets of pectin she recommends is too much. One is usually fine. Also, her sugar content is quite high. Comparing her recipes with others, they seem to be 1 and sometimes 2 cups too much. This results in the jam being so sweet that it hides the fruit flavors. I've cut back on both of these with great success.

The Jam: Our Story Review

The Jam: Our Story
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There are plenty of fantastic photos of the Jam in this book, glossy, one to a page and feature the band and individual photos of Bruce, Rick & Paul. The writing is appalling and a wasted opportunity for Bruce (foremostly) and Rick (who keeps mum most of the time) to provide a candid, frank and interesting portrayal of the band and of Paul Weller. Much of the tone is snidely, the authors sort of creep around the subject of Paul Weller in the hope of not directly offending him, but instead serve him up with loads of indirect put-downs and patronising gibberish which in fact, has the effect of making Bruce come across as the [not so bright member] of the band - with all his fretting and tantrums - rather than Paul who comes across, (if you read between the lines) as a hard-working guy who loved his music and seemed to spend much of his waking hours writing songs (and drinking!) Sure, Paul had has faults, who doesn't, but the tone of the book only elucidates Bruce's shortcomings, not Paul's. The toilet paper anecdotes are truly beyond the pale.
The worst aspect of this book comes towards the end when, horror of horrors, Paul decides to leave the band. Bruce's subsequent reaction sort of goes to show he probably doesn't possess a great deal upstairs, and it illustrates how far out of touch the band were with each other at that point. They didn't seem to communicate much in 1982, maybe Bruce & Rick were scared of Paul? So Bruce was lost in an island of despair and fretfulness over the closing of band. He does his best to serve up the hackest reviews of the Style Council and tell his readers it wasn't the sort of stuff he was interested in, forgetting that a couple of pages earlier he'd said they (Bruce & Rick) surely could have turned their hand to anything Paul wanted to do. Go figure.
This review isn't an anti-Bruce jibe. Bruce I think (going via the sleeve notes of the Jam at the BBC CD release) has realised that things, ie, the Jam ending when they did, was in hindsight the best thing for all of them, and the band. This book could, and should have been a lot better. It's most disappointing that it lacks any real depth, analysis or candidness about Paul and the band and their songs because this would have been the opportunity to provide that. But the book reveals nothing of note about Paul and his artistry and musicality, and all it says about Bruce is that he merely regarded it as a career - no true love of music revealed there, nor does Bruce reveal in himself any true depth of character. A shame, they were a Classic band.
Some of the ... boys-in-the-motel anecdotes are amusing but that's where the book tends to level off. As said, it says more about Bruce and his shortcomings than it does about Paul. Big shame that. Anyway, the photos are great.

I had my doubts when I picked up this book. Principally I was sceptical about how one begins to cover in any substantial way travels though 45 countries in one year. Within the first thirty pages it became clear to me that the author was searching for and painting a comparative picture of our world. In my opinion the book's prime attraction is in Haffar's skill at distilling cultures, societies, and entire countries into their essential elements. And he does so with humour, occasionally irreverent but never crass. This is brilliant, entertaining reading for anyone, traveller or otherwise, who is curious about the world we live in.

Sensational Preserves: 250 Recipes for Jams, Jellies, Chutneys and Sauces and How Review

Sensational Preserves: 250 Recipes for Jams, Jellies, Chutneys and Sauces and How
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a very experienced home canner and I was not impressed by this book. It was written primarily for a European audience by a British author and many of the ingredients are difficult to find. There are also a number of unusual recipes - Carnation Liqueur, Elderflower Cordial, Goat's Cheese in Oil, Pickled Walnuts - that I did not find appealing.
A number of the jams, jellies and marmalades I made following the recipe directions set up too firm, while others failed to set at all. For most of the recipes, the author's instructions require the sugar to be warmed in the oven for 20 minutes, a tricky and time consuming task at best, before the sugar is added to the fruit. There are also a lot of recipes for fruits and jams preserved with alcohol.
A substantial number of recipes do not give processing instructions. Of the recipes that the author does suggest processing in a boiling water bath, many are too low in acid to be safely processed by this method. European canning standards differ from those of the USDA.
While the pictures in the book are pretty to look at, the flavor and texture of the finished preserves are not really all that good.

The art of preserving--brought right up-to-date! Sweet or tangy, to spread on bread, eat on the side, or spice up a dish: these 250 recipes for preserves of every description shrug off the gingham-clad image traditionally associated with jam making. From fresh and fruity conserves to sweet and sour chutney, they'll all add zing to a meal. Along with definitions of every variation--including fruit cheese, mincemeat, glacéd fruit, and vegetables in oil--there are "watchpoints" that warn you about common mistakes and help assure your preserve will come out just right. And, there are a range of delicious recipes in which preserves figure as the main ingredient. Just imagine biting into a yummy tangerine marmalade soufflé for dessert, or the taste of warm duck salad with blackberry dressing. Ordinary sausages and potatoes become out of this world when paired with plum and red onion confit. The pictures on every page will simply make your mouth water!

Summer in a Jar: Making Pickles, Jams and More Review

Summer in a Jar: Making Pickles, Jams and More
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
An innovative idea drives this book, since canning single-jar and small-quantity preserves or pickles is a great way to keep up with a small garden's produce. The chapter called "Single Jar Pickles" contains 27 recipes for preserving a wide variety of vegetables in hot vinegar. The "Salt-Brined Pickles" chapter outlines ...well, pickling in salt brine, of course. The "Relishes and Chutneys" chapter and the section on "Quick and Easy Freezer Pickles" also cater to the home gardener who wishes to put up small harvests without much fuss. A couple of recipes for baked fruit butters eliminate much of the mess and fuss (and second-degree burns!) associated with open-kettle preparation. :) If you are interested in these topics, then by all means give this book a try. HOWEVER...if you intend to concoct jams, jellies, marmalades, preserves or conserves, you may want to seek another source. The low-sugar, no-pectin-added fruit preserves taste less like premium home-made jam than like barely sweetened mashed fruit. Leaving out commercial pectin, and cutting WAY down on sugar, necessitates steps like these: long boiling times (10-30 minutes versus 1 minute with added pectin); use of a jelly thermometer or other lower-tech method to test for gel stage; and an addition of diced tart apples to nearly all jams and jellies. Since the rest of the book is filled with recipies modified for modern needs, it seems anachronistic to revert to this older, messier, less convenient form of jelly-making. IF YOU NEED LOW-SUGAR JAM recipes for health reasons, this is your book. If you want soft-spreading fruit with a barely sweetened flavor, use Summer in a Jar. IF ALL YOU WANT IS SWEET, EASY, REGULAR OL' JAM, get another source--like the Ball Blue Book.

I think the book is well done. It includes more fancy type recipes, than I expected, which was refreshing; but I pretty much stick to the basics because I share what I make with others, and some aren't as willing to try different flavors in their jams. I also expected to find at least three home-made cheese recipes, given the description of this product prior to my ordering it.

Mim's Christmas Jam Review

It's 1915 and Pap is working on the new subway in New York, keeping him from his family on Christmas. His wife, Mim, and children, Saraleen and Royce, miss him very much, so they make and send him some of the family's traditional holiday recipe - Belly-hum jam. This jam is so good, Pap is able to use it to sweeten the sour attitudes of the foremen, Mr. Mead and Mr. Evans, who send the men home to celebrate with their families. Luckily for us readers, the recipe follows the story.
Once again the Pinkneys have brought us a wonderful, meaningful story, this one a touching holiday tale. The scratchboard illustrations are beautiful. I always look for new books by this family of authors and illustrators to add their work to my school library's collection.

This book is basically pleasant eye-candy with nice pictures. However, the canning methods illustrated are outdated and potentially dangerous. For example, the book suggests creating a vacuum seal on jars by turning over the jars after filling. Since this method does not effectively seal out all potential contaminants, it is not perfectly safe! There are better reference books out there, most notably "Blue Ribbon Preserves" by Linda J. Amendt.

Three Great Novels: Dixie City Jam; Burning Angel; Purple Cane Road
Average Reviews:

Burke is a fairly good yarn spinner with a couple of major weaknesses that make his novels rather tiresome after you get into the Dave Robicheaux series.
1. Robicheaux's endless and repetitive dream sequences and conversations with the dead that the author indulges in at some point in almost every chapter of every book. It becomes even more of a tired cliche than Lee Child's "Reacher said nothing."
2. Burke is obviously one of those who will never forgive Ronald Reagan for winning the Cold War. By the time he brings his characters and stories into the 1990's he has to labor pondorously and hard to fit his archaic 1980 world view into the context of his novels current events.

Reading McLaughlin's poems is like listening to Janis sing. You feel this gutsy broad way down deep in your bones. She didn't just write these poems. She's lived in them and with them all her life.

As the title implies, Jam features a wealth of poems driven by a distinct music resulting from Joe-Anne McLaughlin's studies in both jazz and blues. Propelled by strong rhythms and line breaks, McLaughlin's poems present a variety of colorful characters trying to get by on the strength of "Waller's boogies / or Morton's rolls / Hot Lips' riffs / or Bessie's groans." An original and exciting voice, McLaughlin's poems are introduced by award-winning poet and essayist Stephen Dunn.
