The Memory of Water: Homoeopathy and the Battle of Ideas in the New Science Review

The Memory of Water: Homoeopathy and the Battle of Ideas in the New Science
Average Reviews:

Schiff's account of the 'persecution' of Jacques Benveniste, the French scientist who produced strong experimental evidence that homeopathic dilutions can have significant biological effects, reveals that science, the great project of enlightenment and reason, has mutated into something similar to fundamentalist religion.
This religion of true science has its own high priests, taboos and holy dogmas. The high priests are the editors of scientific journals such as Nature, who self-righteously decide which of nature's phenomena can and cannot be admitted into scientific scripture. Consideration for scientific canonization of a phenomenon usually depends on compatability with dogma and tradition.
Benveniste's research, described in the first half of this book, did not meet this criterion. It challenged the dogma that living system can be reduced to the mechanical interaction of molecules, and it violated a scientific taboo by suggesting that homeopathy, that old heresy on the systematic ridicule of which whole sceptical careers have been built, might be legitimate after all. A historical embarrasement for scientific orthodoxy seemed imminent.
Beneveniste had to be discredited by any means necessary. The second half of Schiff's book is devoted to a detailed discussion of what these means were. Among them are accusations of incompetence and fraud, rumors of mental instability, censorship, ridicule, misinterpretation of statistical data, mock replication of experiments and 'scientific harassment' (a barrage of invalid criticisms and poorly thought through alternative "explanations" that do not explain the observations, combined with escalating demands for more evidence, even though it has already been decided that no amount of evidence will be considered convincing), and ultimately, the withdrawl of funding.
Schiff's account of the lengths that the scientific establishment will go to to defend preconceived notions of how nature ought to work leaves no room for doubt that 'big science' is broken and needs to be fixed. An excellent, highly educational book that is deserving of five stars.

I'm stretchiiingg here to make it to 4 stars. 3 to 3.5 is probably more accurate. I found the 2 stars of the previous review to be excessively harsh, so I poured on a little bit of extra love for the authors. I simply don't find this book to be all that bad - it's a decent resource. Had it been combined with Steven Roby's Black Gold, it would have become a bonafide winner. Alas, instead I fear that much of the intimate details the previous reviewer yearns for has been lost into the purple haze of time - and perhaps that aspect should have been captured more clearly. I remember reading elsewhere (Guitar Player? Guitar?) an interview with a player on Electric Ladyland, maybe Jack Cassady. Anyway, he mentioned that during an all-night session, the engineer fell asleep twice at the console and of the tape reel ran out while the band played on. Apparently Jimi gave him a real chewing out the second time. It would be nice to have more of that history, but as mobile as Jimi was on tour, he was equally mobile as a recording artist. For the shortness of his career, he certainly recorded at a huge assortment of studios. When you think of that, it makes it all the more reasonable to dredge up the history, with so many people involved, many of them transient and some now passed on.
So the bottom line is that I find this to be a pretty good book. Not necessarly the be-all and end-all tome it might have been, but considering the time period and the circumstances, really, a decent quality, well written book.

Jimi Hendrix is universally recognized as the greatest rock 'n' roll guitar player of all time. But until now, the story of how he made his amazing music has never been told. Jimi Hendrix: Sessions is the first book to take us inside the studio and reveal, album by album and track by track, how his songs were born and shaped into the classics they would become. Hendrix biographer John McDermott, working with Hendrix's producer Eddie Kramer and bass player Billy Cox, recreates in extraordinary day-by-day detail the making of every one of Hendrix's songs. Based on firsthand accounts by people who were there and on hundreds of hours of unreleased tapes, this book reveals what went into the creation of "Purple Haze", "Foxey Lady", "All Along the Watchtower", and Hendrix's many other masterpieces. It explains how Hendrix manipulated the primitive studio technology of his time to achieve his unprecedented sounds, and it shows the new heights toward which he was reaching at the time of his death. Beginning with Hendrix's legendary journeyman sessions for the Isley Brothers and other soul greats, and continuing through his last work, this is the authoritative treatment of Hendrix as musician that admirers have long awaited. Illustrated with over one hundred photographs, handwritten lyrics, and studio memorabilia, Jimi Hendrix: Sessions is a loving and timeless tribute to the electric guitar's greatest master.

The book was really fun to read and filled with many interesting tips for anyone who is beginning to cook. The variety of recipes are wonderful. I've tried some of the recipes and they were exceptional. The roasted beet and walnut gorgonzola salad, ymmm! The portobello burger and Aioli sauces were incredible. The book gives advice to newer cooks and is a real find for those who love to try new and innovative recipes. Any family member or guest would love eating food prepared from this cookbook, it is a treasure and I already know what I will make next from the cookbook: Olivia's Crunchy Chicken and Gingersnaps. I enjoyed the variety of foods offered: simple to fancy but always unique. I haven't been to Boston in 30 years and plan a trip soon and FIGS will be the first restaurant our family visits.

the girl & the fig cookbook: More than 100 Recipes from the Acclaimed California Wine Country Restaurant Review

the girl and the fig cookbook: More than 100 Recipes from the Acclaimed California Wine Country Restaurant
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book by restaurant owner Sondra Bernstein, with recipes by executive chef John Toulze represents the cuisine served at a chain of Sonoma County based restaurants after which the book is titled. Based on the passions of Ms. Bernstein and her staff, the book and the restaurants focus on figs; dishes based on figs; the produce of Sonoma County; the cuisine of Provence, France; and the similarity of the terroir of Sonoma with Provence.
One object of the book is to publicize the chain of restaurants and the line of products based on the owner's love of figs. This is not too unusual, as I am certain this is one of the motives behind every celebrity chef / restaurant owner's cookbook. Some, like Tom Colicchio are less obvious about this interest. Others, like Emeril Lagasse, are pretty out front about this objective. All restaurant based cookbooks aim at providing the reader with some twist to their cuisine or it's presentation which adds sugar to the bait to create an interest in the restaurant(s).
One special feature of this book is borrowed from Ms. Bernstein's distinguished California culinary neighbor, Thomas Keller of the French Laundry. This is the addition of sidebars on some of the restaurants' more important, or, at least, more interesting suppliers. This includes fig, mushroom, and cheese vendors, past and present. This highlights one weakness to the book, in that it is so thoroughly based on what is available from the gardens and vineyards of Sonoma County. Not everyone in the United States is blessed with access to wild mushrooms and the talented foragers who supply them, or to cheeses from artisinal cheese makers. Happily, the chef / recipe writer has supplied generally available products to substitute for his Sonoma pantry.
The cornerstone of the book's cuisine is the parallel between the Sonoma and Provence produce and the cuisine which can be based on that similarity. Therefore, it should be no surprise to see most recipes appear to be straight out of the pages of books by Patricia Wells and Lydie Marshall. One of the most pleasant parallels is that the Bernstein / Toulze cuisine is based on fairly simple recipes, often with the kind of recipe modularity of sauces and pantry preparations common to an influence from Julia Child. The recipes for stocks, for example are about as simple as they come. There is no Thomas Keller / Judy Rodgers obsessiveness about technique here. Most recipes follow a recent quote I heard from Wolfgang Puck who said that the trick was to start with great ingredients and try not to mess them up. There are some unusual twists, such as the cooking oil of choice, a `blended oil' of one part olive oil and three parts canola oil. I am totally baffled that disciples of Provencal cuisine should eschew pure olive oil.
The recipes are organized by size and role of the dish rather than by main ingredient. Recipe chapters are:
`a small bite' hors d'ourves with figs, radishes, mushrooms, olives, shellfish, charcuterie, and crackers
`from the garden to the stockpot' soups, including many Provencal classics
`in the salad bowl' with lots of vinaigrettes, figs, asparagus, beans, endive, beets, walnuts, and cheese
`large plates' 25 familiar dishs such as pastas, coq au vin, duck cassoulet, and lamb shanks
`sauce over and under' with lots of butter, aioli, pistou, rouille, citrus, shallots, remoulade, and figs
`on the side' with lots of balsamic reductions, familiar vegetable, polenta, couscous, olives, mushrooms...
`sweets' with lots of figs, apples, pears, nuts, lavender, cheese, and cream
The cuisine owes a fair amount to the exchange of cuisine between Provence and northern Italy, with a fairly substantial contingent of recipes involving pasta, risotto, polenta, cipollini onions and balsamic vinegar. This makes the abandoning pure olive oil in favor of the blended oil even more puzzling. In spite of this mystery, I am certain that these recipes, especially those based on figs, are superior to many and worthy of the authors' dedication to Provence.
One very serious aspect of the restaurants' connection to Provence is Ms. Bernstein's commitment to wines based on varietals originating in the Rhone valley rather than the wines which made Napa and Sonoma wines famous. These are the Carignane, cinsault, Grenache, Roussanne, Syrah and Vognier grapes. All but the Syrah are unfamiliar to me, but that's just a symptom of my ignorance of wine. Each recipe gives a very simple recommendation of wine selected from this list. The emphasis on simple is important to contrast it to the elaborate, sometimes arcane recommendations given by Patricia Wells and others.
The authors' dedication to their chosen cuisine and their featured product is genuine and fruitful, producing many simultaneously simple and worthy recipes. There are occasionally long recipes for standards such as cassoulet and coq au vin, but that should be no surprise. They have convinced me to look forward to a visit to their restaurants if I ever get to northern California.
Recommended recipes for even novice cooks. A good read at a fairly reasonable list price. If you already own 10 books on Provence cuisine, you may want to take a pass.

Honored as a "historic rock and roll landmark" by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, Austin City Limits is the longest-running popular music series in American television history. ACL began in 1974 by featuring original Texas music that ran the gamut from western swing and Texas blues to Tejano, progressive country, and rock and roll. By the time the show celebrated its thirty-fifth anniversary in 2009, its coverage encompassed unique regional, national, and even international performers in an eclectic, ever-expanding range of genres. ACL has also broadened its live audience beyond its iconic studio on the University of Texas campus with the annual Austin City Limits Music Festival, a three-day extravaganza that spotlights some 150 bands and attracts more than 200,000 fans.

Austin City Limits captures the excitement and energy of the show in photographs by ACL's longtime still photographer, Scott Newton. The images span ACL's first thirty-five years, with special emphasis on legendary artists such as Johnny Cash, Ray Charles, Leonard Cohen, and Willie Nelson, and the most compelling contemporary performers and bands from the past ten to fifteen years, including Coldplay, John Mayer, Elvis Costello, Pearl Jam, David Byrne, The Flaming Lips, Wilco, Lucinda Williams, and Norah Jones. Proving that he has few peers among photographers of live music, Newton's images deliver amazing glimpses into the intimate, revealing, and powerful moments in each artist's performance. They also depict the direct and potent connection between performer and audience that has always been a hallmark of Austin City Limits.

This book is a must-have for anyone studying Albanian. I highly recommend the combo of Roza Stefanllari's verb book and Ilo Stefanllari's dictionary.
The book of 541 Albanian verbs includes an introduction with all the conjugation patterns for the four main types of Albanian verbs -- the "-oj verbs," the regular consonant verbs, the vowel verbs, and the reflexive/passive verbs. The next section covers all the moods and tenses of Albanian verbs and provides English examples. The bulk of the book provides one page for each of the 541 most common Albanian verbs, fully conjugated. There are several indexes and a list of 1100 other verbs to help you find the correct congugation pattern for them.
The last section of the book provides a very practical phrasebook and concise dictionary of common Albanian words and phrases -- in both Albanian and English.

This book is about a girl within a group of people who seem to be sure that she can always understand their codes and communications - and whatever happens among them. But the thing is that she is not always aware of whatever relationships and situations might be taking place among them. Since nobody seems quite willing to communicate with her "normally", misunderstandings ensue. Despite her willingness not to be disruptive, the lack of clarity and the forcefulness with which some address her in search of seemingly definite, realistic responses about unreal notions and situations, results in unnecesary disappointments. To a certain extent, a feeling of isolation comes from the realisation that she has been left somehow hanging on the margin of a series of codes and gestures that she can not reproduce by herself or respond to without this becoming a probable source of further conflict. She is aware that her own words and gestures are always somehow non-voluntary, and nevertheless other people seem to pay SUCH close attention to them, as if these were truly and deeply meaningful in themselves when for the most of the time she is simply both unaware and unattentive... In the end she has to make others realise that she can only afford to be either somehow more fully included and clearly addressed or else excluded and that, otherwise others should not be taking her into account at all; overcoming the difficulties and obstacles that they have put between her and them is becoming just too costly in terms of time and energies.

Not just a book of poems, throughout the work are placed a great many essays written by long-time, well-known National slam poets (Taylor Mali, Danny Solis, etc.) about nearly every aspect of reading and performing one's work...a long-overdue codification of information for performing poets at ANY level.
Some of the poems contained within are national favorites, a few legend, but they ALL contain a lesson about performance poetry: that it starts on the page.

This book was a valuable interpreting resource material for me. It can be argued that - although Indonesian (Bahasa Indonesia) is increasingly perceived as a separate language from Malaysian (Bahasa Malaysia) - there are still significant speakers of both Indonesian and Malaysian/ Malay who regard that they are both dialectical branches of the same language. I, for one agree with the latter view.
It is definitely not intended to novice or beginners of either languages but it is ideal for speakers of Malaysian Malay who would like to know about the basic differences of the Malaysian and Indonesian dialects. This book bridges the gaps between these two variants of the Malay languages.
Liaw Yock Fang has definitely contributed to the advancement of the Malay language as the major Lingua Franca of South East Asia. Thanks.

Alot of people have been waiting for this book to come out. I am one. The book "looks" great, high quality design, printing, etc. The Chantry essay in the begining is excellent (but that is to be expected). But after that, it's all down hill. First glaring problem here. "Rock Posters of the 90's" is the title. Then why are half the artists in this book little known artists who never even MADE posters in the 90's? It's like putting out an album of "60's Rock Classics" and half of it is Leo Sayer and Doobie Bros. Another big problem with this book is it seems like there was absolutely NO RESEARCH done in it's making. Old Artrock catalogs are more informative. There are LOTS of artists who are not in here, and should. As there are lots of artists who are in here, that maybe shouldn't. And then big important artists like Mark Arminski, who is truely a pioneer of the poster world only gets one page??? Judging by the reviews of the "45 Cover" book by the same author, you can probably get them both for $5 after the holidays on the "cheapy" table, I now wish I waited to buy this. It is interesting that all of the probelms with the "45 cover" book, are evident in this book too. Sorry. Big let down. Save your money for the Electric Frankenstein book of all of their posters/cover art, and the Art of Modern Rock, which I think will rule!

I've been gym climbing off and on for years, mostly in the last three months as there is an excellent wall at the school I go to, and found this book to be quite helpful in getting me ready for the trip outside. I have been able to climb outside in the past only with the help of other more experienced climbers, and thanks to the help of this book and other resources, I am beginning to feel comfortable going out without the help. However, do not let this book be your only resource. There are many terms not adequately defined and several concepts are not introduced, but are referenced. For instance, the author refers to the "magic X", a method of attaching to anchors, but never defines it, and doesn't even say anything more than "use the magic x method of equalizing the anchors" for many pages. However, if you have other available sources of information, this guide can fill the gaps.
