To VERY briefly summarize the material:
A Chick From Corea is about triplets and 'country and western' sound. Victor plays the melody, while Steve plays chords.
Bangkok Blues finds Steve playing etheral false-haromonics over Victor's anchoring funky blues,then Victor plays hammer-ons over Steve's fretless chording.
Stan The Man: Dedicated to Stanley Clarke. Victor plays a tenor bass- ADGC - against Steve's chords, both take solos at the same time. The chord progresson starts gently so you can hear it, then they crank it up.
Victor's Jam: A funk workout from Victor and drummer Greg Bissonette.A range of techniques is used to keep with the drummer
Thumb Start My Harley: With Steve's fretless played through wicked distortion (like Pink Floyd's "One Of These Days") over Victors pumping foundation, which turns into competing, over-the-top triplet solos. Jack Bissonette's emphatic drumming morphs into a VERY complex solo, in correct time. As Steve says in the lesson intro, "If you think you have good time, pat your foot all the way through that at the tempo of the song and you
should come out right. Until you do, keep trying!" Victor will later explain how he does the very funky "open-hammer-pluck".
Emereld Forest: Victor arpegiates chords through sweet reverb while Steve's fretless sings a sitar-ish melody.
Moonridge: Steve's solo, a study for the right hand (6 string fretless) keeping the D string going, with chords and harmonics. If you had thought there were any limitations to electric bass this should put those fears to rest.
Donna Lee: Victor plays the scales using thumb and index finger, using thumb-down, thumb-up, index finger triplets. The scales are sewn together in the familiar tune, while Steve pays the chords that Charlie Parker copped from "Indiana" to support it. DENSE, with some call and response at the end. (Another take on the same classic tune appears as "Madonna Lee"
on the "Cookbook" cd.

One of the instructors on you tube recommended Dave's website and he had all of his books online to review. He even has short audio files to listen to before you make a decision to buy. I recommend all of his books. It is like having a music instructor. If you wants to know all of the ins and outs of reading music, learning rhythm, and all of the playing techniques these books are for you. Keep in mind that Dave has 3 levels, so you will need to buy all of his series to progress. Amazon did a great job, they shipped quicker than advertised, they got the order right, and I will buy from them in the future.

Searching for the Sound: My Life with the Grateful Dead Review

(More customer reviews)No one book can ever tell the entire tale of the Grateful Dead. Searching For The Sound by bassist and founding member Phil Lesh is the first book by a member of the band to focus on the band itself and Phil has a tale to tell and tells it well. The book starts with Lesh's birth and quickly moves on to his discovery of music. Then Lesh takes us through the embryonic San Francisco scene and on into the evolution of the Grateful Dead. The rest of the book focuses on Phil's intertwined life with the band, the band's extended family, and, ultimately, Phil's own family. It takes only the last dozen or so pages to cover the years since Jerry Garcia's death, but the subtitle of the book is My Life With The Grateful Dead and that name passed into history at the end of 1995. The drugs are there, but rather than glorifying them, a full reading of the book shows that, in the long run, the drugs took a heavy toll. Lesh's writing style is conversational and stream of consciousness and fits perfectly with the story he's narrating. Ultimately, it's a book about MUSIC, its creation, and its powers. In the spirit of the age of disclosure, I must admit to attending 27 Grateful Dead shows between Penn State '79 and Las Vegas '95 and have followed the band members in whatever incarnation since the death of Garcia. I don't think this makes me biased, but I thought you should know. I found the book to be an eye opener and it added context to a major part of my life during the last quarter of the 20th Century. A non-Deadhead should enjoy the book, especially anyone with a taste for biography and the history of rock. If you're looking for the description of one endless drug trip, stay away [or better yet, read the book with an open mind]. I enjoyed Searching For The Sound and would love to see Lesh give us another book sometime in the future.

Steve Kaufman's Four-Hour Bluegrass Workout (Homespun Tapes) Review

(More customer reviews)Steve Kaufman's Four Hour Bluegrass workout introduces 50 fiddle-type tunes. For each tune, the CDs contain a slowed down version, which I found a great way to learn the melody. Then the band kicks it up a notch to full speed. Some are fairly easy to follow along with and some are blazingly fast...a workout indeed. The melody of the entire tune is played once, then the accompaniment is played twice. I found that playing the chords the first time and then the melody the following two time was an excellent way to learn both parts.
Many standard fiddle tunes are included, with straightforward arrangements, often in the style that is common at jam sessions. Learning these tunes provides a great basis for jumping into jams with other players.
Beginners may find even the chords difficult at times, while advanced players are likely to know many of the tunes. I highly recommend this product to intermediate players looking to learn new tunes and to build speed and technique.

The author makes it super easy to understand how to get into all the features that Garageband offers. There are excellent examples and tips that will advance the knowledge of even the most experienced of Garageband users.
I particularly recommend Chapter 10 on Podcasting for anyone who wants to create professional podcasts with the greatest of ease. I had no idea Garageband could be so simple to use for podcasting, but the results speak for themselves and author, Todd Howard, does a killer job of teaching the process.
Chapter 11 is also great about mixing tracks and taking advantage of all the cool automation features you can use to get the best results from your recording sessions. Todd also demystifies the extensive library of Garageband effects and how to adjust parameters to get just the kind of unique sound you are looking for.

(More customer reviews)For anyone unfamiliar with Cajun or Creole music, Blair Kilpatrick's autobiographical journey into the world of Cajun-Creole music via the diatonic accordion begs the question : why should something so anecdotal possibly appeal to a wider public, going beyond restricted circles of Cajun Creole music and accordion fanatics ?
Maybe because this shared personal and heartfelt autobiographical account may help reveal better how we the readers relate to and act upon our own passions and limitations : musical or otherwise. It helped me do just that.
The author ( a practicing professional psychologist ) details stages of fascination with the music, learning of the instrument, fear of public performance, and the knowledge, skills and insights gained from her mentor and acceptance into the Cajun Creole music community, and much more.
I found it thoroughly entertaining, engaging and extremely well-written. The quality of writing is impressive and is in itself worth the hardcover price.
I would have given it 5 stars, but feel perhaps the amount of detail given to the mentor's declining health and eventual passing gave the book a slight imbalance and sense of impending doom towards the end, though he is an extremely important part of understanding the whole process she had gone through.
Overall, a beautifully written and beautifully produced book, with a lovely dose of feminine charm and valuable insights into Cajun Music and Culture. Anyone who loves quality writing, roots music, hot food, accordions and community based music are sure to enjoy it.

(More customer reviews)If this WERE a work of fiction, Turk's book would not be so offensive, but I have spent well over twenty years interviewing people who knew Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald. I am NOT Sharon Rich. I have spoken with Nelson Eddy. I have even interviewed Gene Raymond. I can honestly say the evidence is overwhelming that Jeanette MacDonald lead a different life than the one presented by Mr. Turk. It is not enough to just read a woman's unpublished autobiography and talk to her husband. There are reasons why both might lie. Jeanette MacDonald did not want to shock her fans or bring down the public personnas of herself and Nelson Eddy when she wrote her autobiography. If Mr. Turk had taken the time to look at the evidence which refutes the "Gene Raymond" version of Jeanette's life, then the book would have fulfilled its potential as a fairly accurate portrait of a complex woman living in a difficult period that straddles World War II. Once Jeanette met Nelson Eddy, he was a driving influence in her life. Nelson Eddy was not a monogamous man. He had many female lovers, and some of them are still alive to talk about him and his relationship with Jeanette, Gene, and Ann Eddy (a woman I have also had the "pleasure" of meeting). Had Turk taken the time to actually follow up the research on the Eddy/MacDonald relationship, he might have presented history in a much more accurate light. It's a shame when an ordinary researcher blurs history by looking at it through "tinted" glasses. It is a sin when an academic does it, either accidentally or on purpose. Mr. Turk varnished the truth, rewrote it by omission, and basically did a disservice to both Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy. I am curious why Mr. Turk did not accept Lina Basquette's account of Nelson Eddy's prowess with women. I am even more curious why he would insinuate that Eddy was gay when even Shelley Winters has recounted Nelson's attempt to seduce her. The University of California should be ashamed for accepting the publication without looking at the research on the other side of the coin.

Funk: The Music, The People, and The Rhythm of The One Review

(More customer reviews)I wrote a paper in university on the social relevance of funk lyrics (focused on James Brown, George Clinton, and Sly Stone). When treading through the ethnomusicology section of our library, I was dismayed that there was not one funk treatise to be found. Thankfully, someone as versed in the funk as Mr. Vincent has taken a great first step down that path.
The great thing about the book to me is that Vincent manages to display both an academic's need for historical reason, and a funk-lover's passion for the music. It kills me every time he spends a page in the academic's voice, delineating the foundations of the music -- such as James Brown's emphasis on rhythm over melody -- only to wrap things up with a down-home phrase like "...fonk that created a breathless, animated, nasty hype-dog feel." It's a fine mix of reason and passion, in that one sentence. And notice the spelling of "fonk". He also throws in fonque, fonkey, FUNK, FONK (capitalization is his). It makes for a great conversational feel (you can just hear the guttural tone in his voice when he calls Stevie Wonder "fonkey").
He does a fine job displaying funk's lineage, although it is understandably ragged and all over the map. It can get confusing when a discussion of Parliament segues into a discussion of Rick James and Prince, back to James Brown and then onto Funkadelic. But that's the nature of any music's evolution: it bobs and weaves all over the place, taking notes from soul, jazz, gospel, blues, etc. Vincent does yeomen's work keeping the line as simple as possible, showing how we got from funk's beginnings to the various incarnations of the funk today (Dr. Dre and Red Hot Chili Peppers to list two examples Vincent positions under the contemporary funk umbrella).
I guess my original intention when I bought this book was to expand my funk palette. Vincent's range of knowledge is so vast, that anyone with the teeniest of funk leanings will learn of something new to pick up, and most likely, JAM to. The appendix listing his essential funk albums is worth the price of admission in and of itself.

A DIFFERENT SIDE OF ME - Allstar Weekend's first studio-produced track. Features basic rock song structures, a subtle use of vocal harmony, mixed acoustic and electric instrumentation, and major key tonality. 9/10 rating.
DANCE FOREVER - The most popular song on this album, first released as a single before "Suddenly" came out. This song features electronica influences, a subtle use of vocal counterpoint, a subtle use of paired vocal harmony, mild rhythmic syncopation, interweaving vocal harmony, extensive vamping, a clear focus on recording studio production, major key tonality, electric rhythm guitars, prominent use of synth, subtle use of fender rhodes, and upbeat lyrics. 11/10 rating.
CLOCK RUNS OUT - Probably the least popular song on the album, but still has a very catchy chorus. Features punk influences, a subtle use of vocal harmony, mild rhythmic syncopation, varying tempo and time signatures, extensive vamping, mixed acoustic and electric instrumentation, major key tonality, a vocal-centric aesthetic, and heavy electric rhythm guitars. 8/10 rating.
AMY - A nice, rock-style ballad. All I have to say is if someone is named Amy then this is the song for them. Features acoustic rock instrumentation, punk influences, mild rhythmic syncopation, acoustic rhythm piano, use of a string ensemble, extensive vamping, major key tonality, a vocal-centric aesthetic, acoustic rhythm guitars, and romantic lyrics. 9/10 rating.
JOURNEY TO THE END OF MY LIFE - An upbeat look to the future. Features basic rock song structures, punk influences, mild rhythmic syncopation, extensive vamping, major key tonality, electric instrumentation, and a subtle use of vocal harmony. 10/10 rating.
THE WEEKEND - What can you do on the weekends that you can't do during the week? This is the perfect song to wrap up the album with. Features basic rock song structures, punk influences, extensive vamping, a vocal-centric aesthetic, a subtle use of vocal harmony, mild rhytmic syncopation, electric instrumentation, heavy electric rhythm guitars, and a major key tonality. 10/10 rating.

This album is worth every penny. It might even be a little too inexpensive for such great-sounding, feel-good music. Every song explodes with positive energy.

Play Guitar with Coldplay (Guitar Jams Series) Review

(More customer reviews)This is an almost decent product. Mostly I was just impressed with how the musicians who played the instruments on the accompanying CD sound just like Coldplay. The only difference is that there is no Chris Martin vocals...So the first couple tracks are like karaoke.---But I was under the impression that there was also a set of tracks with no guitar at all, just bass and drum. This is not the case. There is just less guitar on the no guitar tracks. So if you want to play along with a band that sounds just like Coldplay to learn their songs, this is good. But even better for that purpose--- the actual Coldplay CD's.
The string by string tuning track is helpful, but that's what a tuner is for-- or just tune to a song.
If you own the albums, I would reccommend just buying the full album tab books for Parachutes and Rush of Blood to the Head and playing along with the actual recordings.
