This book will give you the basics of what you need to know to begin rock climbing, or to help you move on from top roping to lead climbing. But, unlike the other "how to" books out there on rock climbing, it is written in a breezy, entertaining style that will hold your interest like a good novel. You won't feel like you're reading a "how to" book at all. It even makes you laugh! I recommend it highly.

Be aware that this is not a collection of traditional Native American recipes. These seem to have been devised for a modern restaurant as inspired by traditional ingredients. Still, the recipes are adventuresome, and the dishes certainly look appetizing.

The food traditions of North America's indigenous peoples are centuries-old and endure to this day. Feasts that include a bounty of land and sea are the focal point of celebrations and ceremonies; for many, food is what connects them to family, community, and the afterlife. Where People Feast, one of the few indigenous cookbooks available, focuses on Canadian west coast Native cuisine, which takes advantage of the area's abundant seafood, game, fruits, and vegetables--with ingredients both exotic (oolichans, venison, grouse) and common (salmon, crab, berries). The book includes 16 full-color photographs, and 120 delectable dishes that can be easily replicated by chefs at home; the authors also offer plenty of handy suggestions and substitution ideas.

The Global Brain: Your Roadmap for Innovating Faster and Smarter in a Networked World Review

The Global Brain: Your Roadmap for Innovating Faster and Smarter in a Networked World
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
With regard to the term Global Brain, Satish Nambisan and Mohanbir Sawhney refer to "the diverse set of external players that constitute the innovation network for the companies" discussed in this book such as P&G, IBM, Boeing, and Apple]; and Network-centric innovation to describe "the underlying principles of collaborative innovation in such a context." They add that a common theme n their research was their interest in the concept of distributed innovation. That is, "innovation initiatives that are spread across a diverse network of partners." Their vehicle for exploration was the Kellogg Innovation Network (KIN) -- "a forum for senior innovation managers of large companies - affiliated with the Center for Research in Information and Technology that [Sawhney] directs at the Kellogg School of Management. The KIN is an excellent example of the power of the Global Brain in action."
Nambisan and Sawhney carefully organize and present their material within five Parts. During the course of their narrative, they respond to questions such as these:
Why should companies seek innovation externally during a transition from being firm-centric and network-centric?
What are the core principles of network-centric innovation?
What are the four basic models and key elements of network-centric innovation?
How to develop a contingent framework that maps the context for innovation?
Which guidelines can help managers to evaluate the different types of opportunities that are most appropriate to their organization's resources, capabilities, and strategies?
What are the implications of network-centric innovation for the emerging economies?
What are the common trends in various countries' emerging economies?
How to analyze the potential for companies in these countries to "plug into the global brain"?
I especially appreciate Nambisan and Sawhney's provision of dozens of real-world examples that illustrate their key points. For example, in Chapter 5 they examine what they characterize as "the orchestra model" that can take two quite different forms: The Orchestra-Integrator model and the Orchestra-Platform model. With regard to the former, they examine Boeing's 787 Dreamliner project and include Table 5.1 (Pages 96-97) that portrays the project's specific elements of network-centric innovation. With regard to the Orchestra-Platform Model, they examine Salesforce.com and the AppExchange Forum. Figure 5.3 (Pages 110-111) illustrates the elements of its network-centric innovation.
"In both the Integrator and Platform model, the innovation architecture defined by the dominant firm becomes the context for the network partners to innovate...In both cases, the tricky part is to bring together a diverse set of capable partners who are sufficiently committed to the innovation architecture and to orchestrate their activities in a manner that leads to outcomes that are beneficial to all the network members."
After completing their exploration of the Global Brain and "painting a picture of the landscape of network-centric innovation," Nambisan and Sawhney urge their reader to chart her or his own organization's "journey" to position it as a player in the same rich and diverse landscape. "We have a simple mantra for [achieving] this: Think BIG, Start SMALL, Scale FAST."
Bon voyage!

All the talk about "open innovation" and externally-focused innovation assumes that "one size fits all" in terms of what network-centric innovation is and how companies should harness external creativity. But the reality is that there is no one right way to master this tool. For instance, loosely governed community-based innovation projects are a very different animal from tightly-orchestrated development projects driven by a large firm. As the landscape of network-centric innovation becomes more diverse and more confusing, there is a desperate need to structure the landscape to better understand different models for network-centric innovation. This book brings clarity to the confusion. Further, it argues that managers cannot rely on anecdotal success stories they read about in the press to implement a network-centric innovation strategy. They need rigorous and analytical advice on what role their company should play in an innovation network, what capabilities they need to create, and how they need to prepare their organization for this significant shift in the innovation approach. This book offers a practical and detailed roadmap for planning and implementing an externally-focused innovation strategy.

Two highly influential writers of satirical poetry in the early Roman Empire, Persius and Juvenal are universally admired and enjoyed for the mordant wit and biting irony with which they exposed contemporary life and abuses under the notorious emperors Nero and Domitian. This new and revised edition--the first since the original publication in 1959--conveniently brings together both poets in a single volume, and contains, along with a freshly amended version of the text, a concise apparatus criticus at the foot of each page and a full Preface, giving a comprehensive overview of the state of the text in light of recent scholarship.

I have received the Consumers Guide on World Fruits and find it a very interesting reference guide for the many new fruits that are becoming available in the markets now. I didn't know there were so many different kinds of fruits! By using this guide I am able to find information on how to judge the ripeness of the various fruits I purchase. A lot of people I know seem to have this same problem, especially with honeydews and watermelons. This book also answers questions I have about the different variety of fruits, particularly oranges, tangelos and mandarins as to whether they have seeds and how sweet they are. This also applies to the various grapes, plums, peaches and avocadoes in the guide. By checking in this guide about them I know what to expect and feel more inclined to buy some of the more unfamiliar types. I find the trivia section interesting and stimulating for the "fun and knowledge." There is also an excellent section toward the back of the book on how to take care of the fruits and vegetables you buy. Also the nutrition chart is extremely informative since we are all more concerned with a healthy diet. "All in all," I feel it is a first-rate reference book and a necessity in today's markets.

The Hunting of the Last Dragon Review

The Hunting of the Last Dragon
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As the story opens, our heroes, Jude and Lizzie (aka Jing-wei) are nerving themselves to take on a fire-breathing monster. How they got into (and out of) this predicament makes for an engaging adventure tale. The conceit that the illiterate peasant lad Jude is relating his story to a kindly monk for posterity ratchets the suspense down a notch (we know he will survive the story's hair-raising episodes), but Jordan keeps the page turning as we wonder how he will manage this, as well as creating a mysterious and sympathetic character in Jude's companion, Jing-wei, who he rescues from a horrid life as a freak exhibit in a traveling fair. The gentle teasing by which Jude ends each chapter on a cliff-hanger ("I don't want to make you late for prayers, brother!") is amusing and serves to draw the reader into the surprisingly authentic medieval world. Although I enjoyed the well-realized setting, fast moving plot and touches of humour, I found that the tender relationship between the two friends gave the book its heart. Once again, Jordan has crafted a winner.

The Full Tilt Poker Strategy Guide: Tournament Edition Review

The Full Tilt Poker Strategy Guide: Tournament Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was suspicious of this book and wasn't sure it would include any new information that isn't in other poker books (Harrington or Sklansky and Malmuth). Many poker books rehash concepts (play tight early, more aggressive later). This book has several new concepts I haven't read before. For example, Howard Lederer talks about a hand versus Phil Ivey when Ivey raised. Howard raised all-in. Ivey folded. Lederer analyzes this nondescript hand and explains the concept of leverage. Andy Bloch in his preflop hands goes far beyond "play early tight, play quality hands" and gives a chart for the "Jam or Fold" game (small blind v. big blind). His chart, he believes, is superior to the Sklansky-Chubakov Jam of Fold ratings because in the S-C rankings the small blind turns up their hand. In Bloch's chart, the small blind does not (which is more realistic). Andy explains that the S-C underestimates hands such as 9-T s Jam value. Howard Lederer's chapter on Limit Holdem made me excited to play Limit holdem. He gives the reader a good limit system that the blinds can play out of position against a raiser. Chris Ferguson's chapter on postflop No Limit play is also valuable. Ferguson's chapter is like a minilesson with him. Other games besides Holdem are covered. Matusow in the 08 chapter explains why he raised with K-Q-J-6 facing heavy preflop action! The book is full of things like this. I was afraid that this book was an attempt to make a quick book on the poker boom with many authors writing a chapter for a quick paycheck and not taking responsibility for overall shoddy work. It isn't the case. You will find material here that you will not find elsewhere.

Bedtime for Frances (Trophy Picture Books) Review

Bedtime for Frances (Trophy Picture Books)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great book, and brilliantly illustrated. The others in the series (like Bread and Jam for Frances) did not use the same artist and have an inferior look. The picture of Frances and her Father brushing their fangs before bed is incredibly cute, and my children think the picture of the father half awake in bed is hilarious. The original black and white illustrations are actually better and more scary-looking. Get an older copy if you can find it.
To the more hysterical people in this forum who think their children are irreparably harmed by the spanking reference: I think what you really don't like is that the father threatens a spanking without being portrayed as some horrible monster. Aren't books supposed to be about learning? Just tell your children that back when this book was written (1960) smacking kids on the butt was a fairly common form of discipline. Tell them that you think this is wrong, although some parents today disagree. If your children are still traumatized, then you better home school them, because they are simply too emotionally fragile to go out in the real world.

Web ReDesign 2.0: Workflow that Works (2nd Edition) Review

Web ReDesign 2.0: Workflow that Works (2nd Edition)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is a high-level, phased approach to web design. The context is the development team's workflow, and all of the key tasks, deliverables and roles that need to be choreographed to successfully develop, implement and maintain a web site.
From a project management point of view this book serves as the basis for a work breakdown structure (WBS), and the project sequencing. I was able to quickly develop a generic project planning template that contained a relatively detailed WBS, project phasing, roles and responsibilities matrix and activity diagram. These tools were easy to extract from the book because of how well the authors have thought out the key elements of a web project and the development workflow.
Among the things I most like are: (1) the care that was lavished on the layout and design of this book has resulted in more than mere aesthetics - as I read through it picking out the project elements I found myself inspired by the sheer beauty of the book, and actually felt more creative. Since I am more disposed towards technical aspects than art I was amazed by the influence the book's design had over me. It also made it easy to go through the book and find things. (2) completeness - while the authors do not go very deep in any one topic, they do cover all of the key points in a thorough manner. I found no gaps in coverage, and did not see the superficial treatment of the technical topics as a problem. In fact, this book is ideal for non-technical project managers who need to concern themselves with the project-oriented aspects of a web project. For the more technical members of a project team there is ample material covering every aspect of the technical approach. (3) sequencing - the phases of the project and associated workflow evidences the authors' extensive experience in web development projects. A lot of thought went into this and I couldn't help but think of the hard lessons learned on prior projects that resulted in such a refined workflow. (4) expert topics - the insets titled imparted a lot of useful information, making this book all the more valuable.
For detailed project planning and deeper look at technical issues I will always recommend Web Project Management by Ashley Friedlein. However, after reading this wonderful book I am now recommending that this book be read before tackling Mr. Friedlein's book. I also recommend that this book be provided to all key members of the project team because it shows the big picture and gets everyone pulling in the same direction. In my opinion, this book is an essential read for anyone involved in web projects.

The Jain Path: Ancient Wisdom for the West Review

Jainism is an ancient faith full of profound wisdom. However, it is little known and understood in the West. Aidan Rankin has done an insightful translation of the faith and its core values, comparing them with western philosophy and science lucidly and with painstaking detail. It is a very accessible book, ideal for those interested in understanding Indian wisdom and its modern-day relevance, but trained and raised in the West. It is a genuine search for truth and wisdom which is inclusive of the spiritual realm. It recognises the openness, humility and authenticity of Jainism and is a great window for the liberal seeker of wisdom.

Jainism is one of the world's oldest religions, and perhaps the most demanding, rational and radical of all of them, attaching a great importance to individual responsibility. Today we are questioning our own inherited values and also rediscovering ancient traditions. We are looking for continuity and balance-a return to the centre. Understanding of Jain principles can point us towards the elusive paradigm shift, giving spiritual and intellectual strength to a new global ethic of compassion and interdependence.

I found this book very good for just ONE particular type of Traffic and not very general as it could be deduced from the title. Very good for highways but nothing else, even is quite limited from the Complex System analysis. Very good if that is your main interest (freeways) but take care if you are interested in more complex situations of traffic with more constraints and boundary conditions, like traffic lights, crossing roads and so on.

When I opened the box to receive this book, I was ready to study the book of Enoch. Instead, this book was more so a devotional. That's fine, but the title is indeed misleading. It has nothing to do with Enoch's Vision, the stories of angels, or the war between good and evil from the beginning. Please beware of that the author wrote 60 plus pages that can be read to your child at bedtime. Again this book is in no fashion an exhaustive of Enoch's vision!

Until now, most of us have had to go to our local Hispanic markets to taste these treats, but no longer. Now, Fany Gerson will teach you how to create these dishes and many more in the comfort of your own kitchen.
Ms. Gerson does for dessert what Bayless did for main dishes, she brings the authentic food to the American audience and she does so in an approachable, comforting way. For those that need baking and candy making refreshers, they are provided, along with amazing, beautiful pictures so you know how yours should look at the end. Each recipe has its name in Mexican and English and cultural tidbits. Those just make the book even more enjoyable.
There are nine chapters. In English, they are:
*Beverages
*Sweets from the Comvents
*Corn
*Heirloom Sweets
*Morning Sweet Breads
*Fruit

*Frozen Treats
*Modern Mexico
I am a chef and I grew up in south Phoenix. Never before have I seen a cookbook such as this (and I own over 400 cookbooks, now). This is a visual, mental treat and when you take the effort to make these classic, authentic sweets, it is a treat for mouth and soul, too.
