Putting It Up With Honey: A Natural Foods Canning and Preserving Cookbook Review

Putting It Up With Honey: A Natural Foods Canning and Preserving Cookbook

This book is a guide to preserving fruits and vegetables while avoiding processed sugar. Although the book refers to honey in the title, not all the recipes use honey, but they all seek to preserve food in natural ways, without sugar or other questionable additives. The book begins with a short introduction describing canning methods and equipment. Then there are chapters on jams, preserves, butters and conserves, canned fruits, pickling, and dried foods. An appendix contains useful charts with amounts of food to be grown and canned for a family of six, a calendar showing which produce items are likely to be in season when, and some tips for canning. Specific canning tips for different techniques are also included in each of the chapters. There is an index.
I've tried several of the recipes in this book and found them to be straightforward to follow, and the end results have been tasty. Geiskopf includes a nice selection of berry recipes and some for rhubarb as well. Her recipes for dips to be used with dried foods as alternatives to sulfur preservation are particularly useful. However, the introductory material about canning can be a bit confusing. The explanations and instructions are a little hard to follow. Fortunately, clear descriptions of canning methods can be found in numerous other books, so if you use this book just for the recipes and get your canning information elsewhere, you should have no problems.

The Cancer Prevention Diet: Michio Kushi's Macrobiotic Blueprint for the Prevention and Relief of Disease Review

The Cancer Prevention Diet: Michio Kushi's Macrobiotic Blueprint for the Prevention and Relief of Disease

The Cancer Prevention Diet, by Michio Kushi, outlines the causes and cures for cancer, according to a macrobiotic philosophy. This philosophy, posited on yin-yang (as male-female) is about excess, imbalance (sickness) and balance (health) and how to bring this about in our lives and our diets. It is a wonderful book - very thorough on background, filled with testimonies from cancer survivors, outlining the different types of cancers, and detailing information on menus, cooking, healing tactics, etc. Even if one does not fully embrace the macrobiotic philosophy, I think this is a wonderful book, and gives sound advice on healthy eating and lots of other things associated with cancer. I highly recommend this book as a reference book for health, and a book of hope.

Stevia Sweet Recipes: Sugar-Free-Naturally Review

Stevia Sweet Recipes: Sugar-Free-Naturally

I've tried several of the stevia cookbooks that Amazon carries and this is the one. The recipes use whole-grain, healthful ingredients - so you end up with food that's not just sugar-free but overall good for you. They taste great and are easy to adapt and tweak. We make muffins based on his banana bread every week. Also this author skips the evangelizing, etc that most of the other books are padded with - just "here's a natural sweetener and how to use it." Really excellent.

Raw Family Signature Dishes: A Step-by-Step Guide to Essential Live-Food Recipes Review

Raw Family Signature Dishes: A Step-by-Step Guide to Essential Live-Food Recipes

This book is filled with recipes that the Boutenkos would present during their workshops. "Core recipes," they have been retested and refined over many years.
Have you ever made a recipe and found that it just didn't turn out nearly as nice as the stunning color photo in the book? One thing that makes this uncook book unique is its step -by-step guide with photos of each step in the process.
Arguably, even an illiterate or non English reader could prepare these recipes! It makes you feel almost as though you are at a raw food demo workshop. (Incidentally, this was done because of complaints from readers that their recipes didn't turn out as good as the Boutenkos'.)
Years ago I paid $15 for a recipe booklet with photos of each step for Igor's bread--and it was worth it for just that one recipe! Now you can get ALL their core recipes in a sturdy book for nearly the same price! These mouthwatering recipes are sure to become staples in your diet, demanded routinely by family members, regardless of whether you "go raw" or not. Healthy alternatives to chocolate cake, bread, chocolate truffles, etc! Guilt free desserts, such as scones like they serve at Starbuck's, but without the constipating, mind-fogging wheat! Some of the recipes are simple, some more complex, yet the photos make even the complex ones seem easy. We learn that raw jams have half the calories as their cooked counterparts, and the sensational mousse cake recipe has only 1/6 as many calories as the traditional one! Yet, no taste is compromised, and in fact, the raw stuff actually leaves the cooked way behind in flavor.
There is even a guide (complete with daily photos) on how to make sprouts. With this book, no one can use the excuse that the learning curve for making raw is too hard; indeed, Victoria may put many of us that give raw food workshops out of business!
Sprinkled throughout the book are some essays, including a list of the benefits of green smoothies, and a story about how Victoria's husband got involved in the food prep. The back of the book has a complete listing and description of the kitchen tools and where to get them, as well as how much to expect to pay.
I have dozens of raw food recipe books, but this one is destined to become a classic---removing the mystique and fear of creating raw gourmet food once and for all!
