Oxford Dictionary of Humorous Quotations Review

Oxford Dictionary of Humorous Quotations

A fantastic book of quotations, and the most comprehensive collection of humorous quotes I've yet to come across. The organization is excellent, with an adequate list of themes serving as the table of contents. Further aiding discovery of the perfect quote is an index of authors/sources, and a very well developed keyword index. Both of these supplemental indices are a bit confusing, but not overly so. They list the applicable theme and the numbered entry under that theme; there are no page numbers given. It's a bit confusing on the first few uses, after that it is simple.
The book is a fun, quick read as well, dense (with its relatively small print) with goodies from John Updike, Cheryl Tiegs, Henry Kissinger, Frank Zappa, George Foreman, P. J. O'Rourke, etc. I heartily recommend it.

Coaching the Sale Review

Coaching the Sale
Average Reviews:

Finally, a book that promotes a clear path to the sale while still valuing the relationship of the client. So often it's about making the sale, forcing the sale and even manipulating the sale; it was nice to have a clear process that allows you to build a solid relationship before the sale is "made". "Discover, Discuss and Decide" may at first seem elementary, but the coaching industry has a very loose and organic approach to everything it does... even anti-consultant at times in an effort to help differentiate ourselves from "them". This book provides a clear framework to have intentional conversations with clients about what they really want & need, and how they want you to help them. I appreciate the book, the models and have already used the process several times to create greater clarity and understand with my clients and prospects. Thanks for another great resource to recommend to my clients and friends. www.seanoliver.com

Make It Happen: The Hip-Hop Generation Guide to Success Review

Make It Happen: The Hip-Hop Generation Guide to Success

I had been waiting for a success book to be written for the hip hop generation by the hip hop generation, along came Kevin Liles.
Given Kevin's high position in the music industry he was able to give insight from on the hustle it took to get there and the hustles hes observed of others. Might I add that that point in itself, his observation of others hustles, is what saved this book from being an autobiography (that wouldnt be a bad thing anyways).
Normaly I dont like too many stories in success books but Kevin is definitly the exception. From lessons learned playing Guts with Lebron James to that reasoning behind his reaction to Dame Dash barking on him on the infamous scene of The HardKnock Life Tour.
The one thing I like about this book also is that it wasnt all about getting money. It wasnt materialistic as most success books. Work hard, play hard seems to be able to sum up his philosophy.
The principles and attitudes Kevin shares arent simply for someone hoping to make it big in music either, they can be applied in anywhere.

The Men Behind Def Jam: The Radical Rise of Russell Simmons And Rick Rubin (Omnibus Press) Review

The Men Behind Def Jam: The Radical Rise of Russell Simmons And Rick Rubin (Omnibus Press)

Alex Ogg did a superb job in his book on Russel Simmons and Rick Rubin, founders of the record label, "Def Jam". Ogg gave the men who launched the careers of Jay-Z, LL Cool J, Run-DMC, the Beastie Boys, and other stars of hip hop their props. While I found it was an insightful read, I discovered that homorous touches and memorable moments abound throughout the book. Since I am an fan of the Beastie Boys, I enjoyed the early part of the book which dealt with the rap/rock phenomenon in the 1980's, although I was a bit dissapointed that Ogg didn't delve more deeply into how Rubin got to be friends and roomates with Adam Horovitz (Ad-Rock of Beastie-Boy fame.) Nevertheless, Alex Ogg, a gifted writer, knows how to put together a good Def Jam history book, and without a doubt loves hip-hop very much.

having introduced the world to LL Cool J, the BeastieBoys, Public Enemy, DMX, and Jay-Z, the label formed byhustler-incarnate Russell Simmons and A & R maverick Rick Rubin hasnow successfully marketed what was a ghetto phenomenon into the mostpervasive youth culture of the late 20th century. This book documentsthe growth of Def Jam from humble origins to its current status as thepre-eminent black music label of the 80's and 90's.
