Joan of Arc by Herself and Her Witnesses
Regine PERNOUD, _Joan of Arc by Herself and Her Witnesses_. Translated by Edward Hyams. Lanham, MD: Scarborough House 1994 (reissue of 1964 original). 287 pp., with index and plates. ISBN: 0-8128-1260-3 (pb).
This book is a biographical monograph by French Joan of Arc specialist Regine Pernoud. She first published it in 1964 and it has remained in print since then. The book opens with a background-setting introduction describing the geopolitical realities of royal succession in France in the late 14th and early 15th centuries, national division through civil war, and the contending forces and their allies. Nine substantial chapters comprise the main text. They cover JoanÕs early years (chapter 1); her vision and quest (chapter 2); her meeting with Dauphin Charles VII and the aftermath (chapter 3); her military campaigns (beginning with the crucial battle that lifted the English/Burgundian siege of Orleans, and concluding with CharlesÕ coronation at Rheims, chapters 4-6); her politico-religious trial of condemnation (ch. 7), her execution by fire (ch. 8); and her posthumous trial of rehabilitation (ch. 9).
The authorÕs narrative method is to present JoanÕs life and the events she inspired and lived through using extracts of testimony from her trials of condemnation and rehabilitation and from other primary sources (examples are: letters, journals and account books). Pernoud proposes on page 8 to Ò...let the historic documents themselves make answerÓ to questions about Joan, what she did and what was done to her. By this method, Joan is made to speak directly to readers. Pernoud, however, does not simply assemble a catalogue of quotations, but adroitly interleaves direct speech with narrative that pairs what is said with cultural interpretation. She thus avoids the problem of leaving untutored readers without indices to the religious, political and military context that imbue JoanÕs story with its fascination. However, Pernoud chose wisely to minimize analysis and to allow the story to unfold primarily from the documents. She invites readers to judge Joan themselves.
Pernoud appends a brief but valuable commentary to each chapter. These commentaries provide more background about events and discuss contentious arguments in the study of JoanÕs life. For example, Pernoud disposes handily of the idea that Joan was an illegitimate daughter of royalty who had been spirited away to safe haven as a child, triumphantly emerging to rescue the nation (pp. 66-9 and thereafter). Pernoud also provides incisive remarks on the provenance, dating and validity of the documentary evidence in these commentaries.
A sample extract from JoanÕs trial of condemnation offers insights into her beliefs and personality (pp. 174-75). Joan responds to interrogator Jean de La Fontaine (March 17, 1431):
La Fontaine: Do you know whether Saints Catherine and Margaret hate the English?
Joan: They love that which God loves and hate that which God hates.
La Fontaine: Does God hate the English?
Joan: Of the love or hate which God has for the English and of what He does to their souls, I know nothing; but well I know that they will be driven out of France, excepting those who will die there, and that God will send victory to the French over the English.
La Fontaine: Was God for the English when their cause was prospering in France?
Joan: I know not if God hated the French, but I believe that it was His will to let them be stricken for their sins if there were sins among them.
La Fontaine: What guarantee and what succour do you expect from God for your wearing of manÕs clothes?
Joan: For the clothes as for the other things I have done, I expect no other recompense than the salvation of my soul.
I do not read French and so cannot comment on the accuracy of Edward HyamsÕ translation. But, he did receive the 1965 Scott-Moncrieff Translation Prize for this work. Hyams rendered the transcripts in a style that unmistakably is not modern English. Antique grammatical constructions abound. These aspects of the translation provide much of the savor in the text.
This book is well worth reading and thinking about. Its special value is that Pernoud presents a view of Joan that personalizes her without analyzing her. Although an authorÕs point of view and the material selected necessarily influence how readers perceive the subject, PernoudÕs method here is more transparent than others she could have chosen. A _Saturday Review_ article stated ÒOne feels closer to Joan in these pages than in any other of the modern biographies...Ó when the book was first published; this quote is from a cover blurb and does not overstate the case. One caveat about reading this volume is necessary. It is that readers untutored in the history of the period will need to consult other sources to understand the times and the importance of what Joan accomplished in life and death.
Last is an idea for two interesting projects. Reading this work together with Carlo GinzburgÕs _The Cheese and the Worms; The Cosmos of a Sixteenth-Century Miller_ (1992) and Jonathan SpenceÕs _GodÕs Chinese Son; The Taiping Heavenly Kingdom of Hong Xiuquan_ (1996) would provide superb material for cross-cultural comparisons of three religious visionaries. Second, these same books would provide material for comparing three anthropological approaches to history by scholars who have mastered their craft.

Enterprise Integration Patterns: Designing, Building, and Deploying Messaging Solutions Review

Enterprise Integration Patterns: Designing, Building, and Deploying Messaging Solutions
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
To do justice in reviewing this book, I should depict every single pattern and give you multiple examples on how it would apply to your job as a Project Manager, Software Architect, Technical Lead or a Developer. That would be a 500-page book all by itself. In short, this is one great book. The first book to actually take a complex and ever growing topic such as MOM, Message Oriented Middleware, and give you its benefits and the best practices/patterns all in one book.
The author starts by giving the reader the top reasons why messaging should be chosen for the next project:
1)Remote communication
2)Platform/Language Integration
3)Asynchronous communication
4)Variable timing
5)Throttling
6)Reliable Communication
7)Disconnected operation
8)Mediation
9)Thread Management
The author goes into detail on each of these reasons. These reasons would convince any software architect, but the author goes even further than that and reiterates the benefits of each of these reasons and elaborates on them thru out the book.
Chapter 3 of the book starts by breaking up a messaging system into its main components and briefly explaining each one:
1)Message Channel
2)Message
3)Pipes and Filers
4)Message Router
5)Message Translator
6)Message Endpoint
Each of these high level topics is then broken down and various patterns are shown for each section. Just like the GoF book, the reader can simply go the desired section and read the patterns that are associated with that "subsystem"
Each section is then followed by a full-blown example, which to me is priceless. The examples are shown using the most popular middleware vendors such as TIBCO, IBM, Microsoft, Web Methods, SeeBeyond and a couple JMS vendors. The examples show the similarities and differences in implementation but clearly show how EACH pattern that was just covered in the previous section applies to the example.
Having worked with many of the MOM vendors covered in this book, Chapter 7, Message Routing, is my favorite chapter. The author breaks down this topic into 14 different patterns:
i)Pipes and Filers
ii)Message Router
iii)Content-Based router
iv)Message Filter
v)Dynamic Router
vi)Recipient List
vii)Splitter
viii)Aggregator
ix)Resequencer
x)Composed Message Processor
xi)Scatter-Gather
xii)Routing Slip
xiii)Process Manager
xiv)Message Broker
The chances are, not many of us need to write a MOM due to the fact that there are many vendors out there that are doing that already! But one could certainly use this section for education purposes, and/or use it a checklist of "nice-to-haves" when shopping around for a MOM vendor. By reading the book, you can figure out what "features" apply to you, your application and your enterprise, and take that list and see which vendor has implemented that feature.
In summary, Gregor Hohpe and Bobby Woolf have done a fantastic job depicting a very complex topic. I have made a place for this book right next to the original GoF Design Patterns book.

This book is very enjoyable with two to four year olds of our family;however, I was disappointed that Tonka was listed on every truck...and not real monster trucks that compete were highlighted....My fault I guess since I didn't realize it was a generic type book.
The two year old in our family really enjoyed it, but our young four year old who is reading some now was disappointed not to enjoy a story with real trucks like Gravedigger/Eradicator/etc.
I am searching now for a "real monster jam book" and I think he will enjoy it more.
I would buy the book again though with more emphasis on the younger child.

Outline of a Theory of Practice (Cambridge Studies in Social and Cultural Anthropology) Review

Outline of a Theory of Practice (Cambridge Studies in Social and Cultural Anthropology)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For anyone interested in cultural studies or in ethnology/ anthropology/ sociology, _Outline_ is a must read.
Bourdieu, a teacher of Foucault, has been rated France's 2nd most influential scholar (after Foucault) and for good reason. In _Outline_, Bourdieu provides a well-grounded introduction to his main concepts and gives a great deal of supporting detail to support his interpretations.
At times, his descriptions of the Kabyle culture seem to be far too long for persons who are reading him as a general social theorist. If you do not have a deep-rooted love of sociology or other culturally-immersive social sciences, you might prefer his _Logic of Practice_, which has less ethnology in it, or _Practical Reason_, which has nearly none.
If you are a student of culture, however, you will find these extended examples to be excellent background material and useful illustrations of Bourdieu's concepts.
In terms of writing style, Bourdieu is uneconomical, but the payoff is worth slogging through his difficult prose.

Outline of a theory of practice is recognized as a major theoretical text on the foundations of anthropology and sociology. Pierre Bourdieu, a distinguished French anthropologist, develops a theory of practice which is simultaneously a critique of the methods and postures of social science and a general account of how human action should be understood. With his central concept of the habitus, the principle which negotiates between objective structures and practices, Bourdieu is able to transcend the dichotomies which have shaped theoretical thinking about the social world. The author draws on his fieldwork in Kabylia (Algeria) to illustrate his theoretical propositions. With detailed study of matrimonial strategies and the role of rite and myth, he analyses the dialectical process of the 'incorporation of structures' and the objectification of habitus, whereby social formations tend to reproduce themselves. A rigorous consistent materialist approach lays the foundations for a theory of symbolic capital and, through analysis of the different modes of domination, a theory of symbolic power.

This book is great for all aspects of Estonian cooking. I am an Estonian-American 1st generation living in Australia. I have tried for years to do the 'Kringel", festive raisin bread, and all have been sorry attempts. This is the only book that has taken me through it step by step, and this Easter it was terrific. Exactly as my mother used to do. The same with the other receipes, although there are various American additives used which are not available overseas, ie 'Knorr aromatic seasoning'. , 'Old Bay seasoning'. I either do not use it, or use something else. So far it has not proven to be a great obstacle, only a slight irritant.

A History of the Jewish People Review

A History of the Jewish People
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a big and interesting book. It begins with not only the traditional telling of the origins of Biblical Israel, it does not shy away with the intellectual problematics of that story. However, it is not as dismissive of the ancient stories as are most modern critics.
Only about one third of the book deals with biblical times at all, and much of that is well within historical times in the sense that we have contemporary records from other sources. The bulk of the book deals with the Jewish people in other settings, how their fortunes ebbed and flowed, and how they finally won emancipation in Europe.
There is also a telling of the rise of the Zionist movement, the Holocaust, and the founding of modern Israel. Although the later is very short and does not deal with the latest developments because the book is now twenty years old.
It reads quite well. You need not let its thousand page length hold you back because it reads more like a novel than a dry and dusty history. If you take your time reading it you will have more time to think about what you are reading and it will stick with you permanently. If you dash through it, all this great information will evaporate like the morning dew.

A History of the Jewish People presents a total vision of Jewish experiences and achievements--religious, political, social, and economic--in both the land of Israel and the diaspora throughout the ages. It has been acclaimed as the most comprehensive and penetrating work yet to have appeared in its field.

Six distinguished scholars at the Hebrew University, Jerusalem, have set forth here for the first time the authentic story of the Jewish past that is relevant to the Jewish present. Special attention is paid to the significant historical sources that have come to light in the past decades, to the findings of archaeological research, and to source materials in Jewish studies such as talmudic literature--sources that have too often been ignored by historians.

Practice Trax for Guitar (Private Lessons) Review

Practice Trax for Guitar (Private Lessons)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
CONS: The jam trax are useful but they could have been improved by placing rhythm guitars on the CD panned hard right or left so they could be removed. I was hoping for just drums and bass to jam with.
Also, there was some variation in track key and style but overall the tempos and feel of the set of tracks was more similar than i would have preferred. To me it felt like the same improvisation style fit on too many different tracks. The chord progressions are generic (as required i guess). Most annoying to me was the tempos didn't vary enough for my taste. One solution is to get the Marantz PSD230 that can change the tempo of a CD without changing pitch and the pitch without changing tempo.
REQUEST: Maybe Danny Gill can put out style specific Jam Trax in the future !!? :-) I'd be willing to try them and i bet a lot of others would too.
PROS: It is still good for solitary practicing, convenient, and the recording had good sound quality. It's a good occasional alternative to a metronome. In defense of the author i think it would be difficult to put together a "be all, end all, emcompasses all jam track CD that pleases everyone". It could be that it just didn't suit my taste. If you want an beginner to intermediate level, upper mid tempo with lots of blues and minor pentatonic scale based stuff this might be just the thing for you. Plus it always shows up to practice!!

I just bought this, based on experience of Gurstelle's other books ("Art of the Catapult" and "Backyard Ballistics").
I wasn't disappointed at the content, though anybody who has spent time on the internet (especially sites like Instructables or Howtoons) will have seen versions of most of the projects before. The only project that was wholly-new to me was the Mechanical Toe.
What did disappoint was the quality of the book - nice shiny covers enclose dull, yellowing pages. The paper used does not promise long life, and I do not think it would survive if I kept it with the rest of my Making library (in my shed).
So, buy it if you like Gurstelle's style, or if you don't want to spend some time filtering the dross from the Web, but don't buy it if you plan to keep it for several years.

The New Argonauts: Regional Advantage in a Global Economy Review

The New Argonauts: Regional Advantage in a Global Economy
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
AnnaLee Saxenian has long been a follower of localized firm and professional networks in the hi-tech industry, highlighting their superiority over corporate hierarchies in her book "Regional Advantage." More recently, in "The New Argonauts," she has turned to ethnic professional networks in Silicon Valley, especially in the Indian, Chinese and Israeli communities. These networks, originally founded for social purposes, evolved to become professional networks for advice, capital and know-how for immigrant entrepreneurs. As immigrant entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley identified business opportunities in their home countries, the networks extended to support these new ventures. They also tied into their home-countries' networks through alumni associations and family ties.
Thus, organizations that were once highly localized began to reach across continents - and their benefits with them. Access to tacit knowledge (technical and managerial), a common understanding of entrepreneurship, shared language and culture have all been considered factors that are bound by geography and contribute to the success of regional economies. Now, they are transcending vast distances thanks to the kinds of networks described by Saxenian. New "Argonauts" (people who work in two or more regions, shuttling back and forth several times per month) literally carry market and technological knowledge, contacts, business models and capital around the world.
As a result, "Silicon Valley, once the uncontested technology leader, is now integrated into a dynamic network of specialized and complementary regional economies. These new technology regions are not replicas of Silicon Valley, nor are they becoming new Silicon Valleys [...] Even as the returnees seek to use their experience in Silicon Valley to reshape these institutions, distinctive regional and national histories ensure that the identities and technology trajectories of these regions are unlikely to converge."
Saxenian emphasizes the role of entrepreneurial networks over multinational enterprises. Multinationals have traditionally been seen as the prime diffusers of new technologies to "following" economies. In Saxenian's view, they will be supplanted here, as they were in the U.S. hi-tech industry.

Seven Practices of Effective Ministry Review

Seven Practices of Effective Ministry
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book has been a highlight in my reading this year! It has challenged me to look deeper into what needs to be done in ministry. The 7 Practices are (1) Clarify the Win, (2) Think Steps, Not Programs, (3) Narrow the Focus, (4) Teach Less for More, (5) Listen to Outsiders, (6) Replace Yourself, and (7) Work On It.
The book begins with a parable, much like that from authors Spencer Johnson or Ken Blanchard, where the 7 practices are being explained in a story about a pastor with a situation in church where he needs help in. The story begins with the pastor thinking whether he should go for a board meeting (which he was dreading to go), or to go for possibly the most important baseball game that season. In order not for me to spoil your reading, I would not go further but to say that the story will wet your appetite for more.
The book continues to explain each practice not only with clarity, but ending each chapter with a list of questions. It is often that we jump from problem to answers not realizing our answer to the problem may not really be moving us forward. Hence, to have the right answers, we need to first ask the right questions, and this book provides hard questions for us to evaluate where we are. The book can be assumed as a coach for any person in ministry, asking the right and tough questions, and the answers that you come up for those questions would be the process to go toward. This is because every ministry is different, but the questions the same, and your own answers to the questions would suit that context of ministry you are in.

Philosophical Fragments/Johannes Climacus : Kierkegaard's Writings, Vol 7 Review

Philosophical Fragments/Johannes Climacus : Kierkegaard's Writings, Vol 7
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If one were to read only two or three of Kierkegaard's works, this is unquestionably one of the ones to read. In this work and in its successor, Kierkegaard, employing the pseudonym of Johannes Climacus, seeks to explain the nature of Christianity in such as way as to bring out its demands on the individual, and to emphasize its incompatibility with the theology based on the work of Hegel that was becoming progressively more influential in Denmark (and in the rest of the world as well). In PHILOSOPHICAL FRAGMENTS, Kierkegaard explains through his pseudonym, he wants to present the problem of Christianity "algebraically" (i.e., logically), while in the ironically titled CONCLUDING UNSCIENTIFIC POSTSCRIPT TO THE PHILOSOPHICAL FRAGMENTS (ironic because the earlier book is quite short, while the POSTSCRIPT is four times longer) intends to "clothe the problem in historical dress." What Kierkegaard purports to do in this brief book is present the logic of Christianity.
The title is badly translated in all English editions, being a Biblical reference, to the story of the rich man Dives and Lazarus. Just as the poor man Lazarus had to be content with the crumbs from the rich man's table, so Johannes Climacus, who passionately denies that he has any contributions whatsoever to make to the grand Hegelian System, claims to be content with mere philosophical crumbs. For some reason, no publisher or translator has been willing to employ the more accurate if less palatable PHILOSOPHICAL CRUMBS.
Johannes Climacus presents the heart of the conflict between Hegel and Christianity in the first chapter. In Hegelian thought, Jesus in essence is viewed as the non-unique Son of God, and sees him as important for his teachings and the example for others for a transition to all people potentially becoming children of God. The emphasis is on the teachings, and the "truth" of Jesus can be construed as that which he taught. Kierkegaard thinks this is profoundly mistaken, and tries to get at the problem by a thought project that opens the book. Kierkegaard contrasts two kinds of teacher. One is the kind of teacher found in Socrates, where he is able to assist others in learning things because they already had the capacity to learn them. In the case of the Socratic teacher, the individual instructor is not essential to learning the truth. But Kierkegaard asks us to consider a second kind of teacher, one who not merely teaches us the truth, but provides the conditions for making such learning possible. This second kind of teacher is essential to someone learning the Truth, and it is this kind of teacher that Kierkegaard sees as representing Christ. The problem, as Kierkegaard understands it, is that we are separated from God by sin, and therefore we are in a position of needing to be restored to a relationship with God before coming to know God. Jesus is therefore not an accidental teacher of truths of a divine nature, but himself the essential foundation for anyone wanting to come to know God. In other words, for Kierkegaard, Christianity is an event and not a set of teachings: the incarnation of God in Christ as opposed to the things he wanted to teach us.
The remainder of the book explicates this essential distinction between the Christ of Christianity and the Jesus of Hegel. In particular, he deals with the question of the "disciple at second hand" versus the "contemporary disciple." This is essential to consider because while Hegel is thought to take history seriously, his Jesus becomes nonhistorical, while Kierkegaard is intent on emphasizing his historicity.
This is essential Kierkegaard, and along with the CONCLUDING UNSCIENTIFIC POSTSCRIPT and THE SICKNESS UNTO DEATH, my own favorites among his writings. One cannot understand Kierkegaard's thought without reading this book, and along with its sequel represents the heart of what he was trying to achieve in what he called his "Authorship."

Accordion Dreams: A Journey into Cajun and Creole Music
Average Reviews:

For anyone unfamiliar with Cajun or Creole music, Blair Kilpatrick's autobiographical journey into the world of Cajun-Creole music via the diatonic accordion begs the question : why should something so anecdotal possibly appeal to a wider public, going beyond restricted circles of Cajun Creole music and accordion fanatics ?
Maybe because this shared personal and heartfelt autobiographical account may help reveal better how we the readers relate to and act upon our own passions and limitations : musical or otherwise. It helped me do just that.
The author ( a practicing professional psychologist ) details stages of fascination with the music, learning of the instrument, fear of public performance, and the knowledge, skills and insights gained from her mentor and acceptance into the Cajun Creole music community, and much more.
I found it thoroughly entertaining, engaging and extremely well-written. The quality of writing is impressive and is in itself worth the hardcover price.
I would have given it 5 stars, but feel perhaps the amount of detail given to the mentor's declining health and eventual passing gave the book a slight imbalance and sense of impending doom towards the end, though he is an extremely important part of understanding the whole process she had gone through.
Overall, a beautifully written and beautifully produced book, with a lovely dose of feminine charm and valuable insights into Cajun Music and Culture. Anyone who loves quality writing, roots music, hot food, accordions and community based music are sure to enjoy it.

This book has been phenomonal -- Laurie Kaplan's advice for assembling a cancer care team is very helpful, particularly to dog parents who may be "new" to the worlds of holistic and complementary medicine. Laurie's advice helped us implement the homemade diet all of our dog's veterinarians had recommended (a high protein, low carb diet is highly recommended by both holistic and allopathic (traditional) veterinarians for canine cancer patients -- as a side note, Laurie recommends Hill's N/D, which is a prescrpition food formulated for cancer patients. I prefer a similar grain-free, high protein/low carb food called "Innova Evo," which is made by Natura Pet -- the nutritional content and price are almost the same as N/D, but Innova's ingredients are more natural/higher quality, in my opinion. This is a brand new food that wasn't on the market when this book was published. website: www.naturapet.com). Perhaps most importantly, this book gives us caregivers hope and a real sense of being able to help our canine friends through this ordeal. Laurie also emphasizes that the degree to which each of us decide to treat (or not to treat) our pets' cancer is a personal matter, with no "wrong" decisions. I highly, highly recommend this book -- three cheers to Laurie Kaplan!!

Classic Russian Cooking: Elena Molokhovets' "A Gift to Young Housewives" Review

Classic Russian Cooking: Elena Molokhovets' A Gift to Young Housewives

So far I did not have a chance to see an American version of Madame Molokhovet's, only the Russian one. But since probably nobody knows about this book in US, and I turned out to be the first one to review it, I have to "break the ground" and drop a couple of lines.
The original version, first published at the end of the XIXth century, had a goal to help young middle-class housewives covering a wide range of issues from hiring servants to shopping for the house. The recipes were only a part of what can be called an "encyclopedia on running the house".
During the Soviet times there was almost no opportunity to use it because it was almost impossible to buy the ingredients. However, the book was still fun to read. It gives a good picture of the Russian culture of the time.
The recipe part (of the original version) is very thorough and understandable. However, most of the dishes require considerable time, exquisite ingredients and, in many cases, help of another person. However, trying them pays off, for they help you to discover REAL Russian cuisine, very different from "chicken-Kiev" and other tourist traps.
I would recommend this book to those who love Russia, are interested in Russian culture and like to cook something very unconventional. Very curious to see the American version.

Top Cow has given us a story arch that entertaining and fun. What's great is that if you've never read anything having to do with the darkness or witchblade then your still ok, in fact, this is a good place to start if your not familiar with any of top cows characters. Long story short, the dark, the light, etc go to war hoping to tip the balance to their favor. Everything good about this book covers everything such as writing, art, story, etc, so I highly suggest that you give this a shot.
